Probably, many have already heard about this application, it is really good and gives results, correctly drawn cards can help people with different types memory (visual, kinesthetic, auditory). This application allows you to create your own cards and decks and add audio files and images to them.

One useful/harmful feature is the ability to download word decks compiled by other users. “Why harmful?” You ask, everything is simple: because you can learn a word incorrectly if the author of the deck entered it incorrectly, and relearning, as you know, is always more difficult. My advice: make your own decks, if you are in a group or with a teacher, or if you have Hispanic friends, ask them for help.

You can synchronize your decks with your account on the site:

Brainscape

The application has built-in purchases, and it is in English, you can create your own decks of cards, or you can use already created ones (for some need to pay).

Most of us have tried this method at university: you take a card, write the word in English on one side, and the translation on the other. The creators of Mandli promise that the program is suitable for both beginners and those who want to bring their language skills to new level. The result of training in the application will be at least 5,000 foreign words in your vocabulary and the ability to use them correctly in different situations.

One of the most popular and mature (first appeared in 1992) software products that will provide users with several useful and amazing hours of learning any of the three dozen languages that this application has in stock. In order to remember words and grammar on an intuitive level, you have to go through exercises that combine text, image and sound. The further the student advances, the more difficult the tasks will become. If you have a microphone, the program will compare your pronunciation with the correct one and give you a score. By the way, grades are saved and displayed throughout all practical classes.

This app has been an Apple Editors' Choice for two years in a row. Taking into account that in Everyday life each native speaker uses an average of 3,000 words, the authors suggest that users enrich their stock with a dozen new words every day. Thus, in a month there will be 300 of them (February does not count), and in a year - 3,650! At the same time, it is enough to devote only five minutes a day to training. There are six languages to choose from: Spanish, Italian, English, French, German and Portuguese. If you enjoy the app and would like to receive a personalized selection of new words every day, you can sign up for an auto-renewable subscription.

Yes, this application offers to learn only one language, English. But due to the fact that here they did not scatter on different countries and adverbs, the course turned out to be quite rich and useful. It is based on the principles of the natural method, just as in real life. The authors offer to improve their speech understanding skills through a collection of films in English, exercises to train writing, speaking and listening. You will be supported in the learning process by a personal teacher, a native speaker of English. But perhaps the main disadvantage of the application is that you can try the course for free only for seven days.

IN modern world nowhere without English. German, Spanish, and Chinese are also useful. But teaching them is a very difficult task, requiring concentration and time-consuming. This is where applications that make the learning process more visual and simple will help.

This is not one, but a whole group of applications for learning languages. In the App Store, you can find versions of Busuu to learn English, German, French, Japanese, Spanish, Turkish, and even Russian. There is a separate application that deals with "English for the traveller". The program is free, although advanced courses require an in-app purchase. However, even without money, the application is very useful. It is worth noting especially its design. Many language programs look bad, but Busuu is combed, beautiful, with soft and pleasant sound effects. Working with such a program is perceived more as a game, and not as a feat in the name of knowledge.

All tasks in the application are divided into lessons of varying complexity. In each of the lessons, the user needs to complete tasks on a specific topic, while repeating the same words. It turns out quite effectively. First, the user is shown words with illustrations, then they are asked to read the text and answer questions about it, then a small written task. At each stage, the program counts points and does not allow cheating.

Note that Busuu is a whole community of people who study foreign languages. The app offers many interactive features, such as chatting with native speakers or peer-checking assignments.

A group of programs is available for free download from the App Store and Google Play

LinguaLeo

Another very good application that allows you to learn a language in a playful way. Initially, the application was only an addition to the main site, but now it is a completely independent system. The program has built-in many different functions. In addition to the basic ones, such as translating words, there is a fun option "Word Builder" that allows you to collect words by dragging the given letters onto a piece of paper. The possibility of listening has been implemented - the user is invited to write down the words that the program dictates.

The study of words is carried out according to a convenient system: the application gives the word itself, its transcription, pronounces how it is read and gives the sentence in the context of which it occurs. The user is offered two buttons: know/don't know. Thus, the program will repeat unfamiliar words with it and will not endlessly talk about long-learned expressions. All words are sorted into categories. The app is free, but it has limits on how many words you can learn per day. You can rent them for a small fee.

One of the most multilingual iOS apps. The program supports 45 languages. The design of the application does not cause delight, but the functionality did not disappoint. Training is conducted with the help of cards, of which there are a great many, for the most different topics. The program literally hammers words into your head, repeating them over and over again. All this, of course, is accompanied by pictures and voice recordings. There is a fun, but not very useful feature that allows you to see how words are used through Twitter. The user translates the content of the cards into the language being studied, and at the end finds out if he was right.

The app costs $8 and is available for iOS and Android

DuoLingo

A good choice for those who are sure that knowledge should be free. The app is free to download and does not require any in-app purchases. Pros: Nice design and funny green owl that follows your progress. The app does not have a lot of content, but it is very well organized. From lesson to lesson, you are led along a kind of learning map, on which you find a variety of tasks from classic cards to unusual language games. The app allows you to learn German, English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. To encourage yourself to study productively, you can add friends to the app to compete with them. There is also a reminder function for the need to exercise. It's comfortable. DuoLingo is a classic reminder that a free app can be so much better than a lot of paid ones.

Learning English with The New York Times

Very good app, allowing you to quickly improve your real English skills. Of course, there are cards with words, but the main "trick" is carefully selected texts based on the most notable articles from the famous newspaper. Each article comes with audio to help you improve your pronunciation. The program has not been updated since 2010, so you can safely forget about iPhone 5 support, however, if you are not afraid of black stripes along the edges of the screen, you should feel free to download the application. For complete beginners, it is unlikely to be suitable, but it will be a great helper for those who have an average level of knowledge of the language. There are reading comprehension and vocabulary exercises. The program is not aimed at school coaching, but precisely at mastering a real language - reading and understanding texts.

App available for iOS for $3

Babbel (Android, iOS, Windows phone)

For example, applications of the series Babbel. They are suitable for learning the basics of a foreign language, vocabulary on specific topics, grammar rules. You get access to a huge number of courses, each of which is divided into about two dozen lessons. For beginners, basic level exercises are suitable, where, as in the first grade, they teach the simplest words and rules, and also help get used to the sound of foreign speech.

At the very beginning, a clear and accessible explanation of the basic grammatical rules, the meanings of words is given. After that, numerous exercises start almost immediately. At first, everything is simple: insert a word, select the desired picture with a designation, and so on. Soon, the tasks become more difficult, and users begin to pronounce specific words into the microphone, spell the necessary phrases and compose complex applications, and do listening. Babbel provides good reinforcement courses, but in terms of theory, the application is rather weak. To obtain competent theoretical information, it is best to buy a good textbook or reference book.

Advantage Babbel- in a huge number of exercises that are ideal for learning the basics of a foreign language, as well as in a reliable test system. Access is paid. Only the first lesson in the course is given free of charge - then you will have to pay either $ 11 per month, or $ 22 per quarter, or $ 65 per year. A subscription gives you access to all the materials in the library at once. Given the amount of content, the price is quite reasonable. On this moment there are courses in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Polish and many other languages. The specificity of Babbel (again) is that in order to learn each language you need to download a separate application (which in Google Play, App Store and Windows Phone Store dozens).

Duolingo (Android, iOS)

Duolingo is the most popular free self-learning app for iOS and Android. It allows you to learn almost all the major languages of the world from English, and English or German - from Russian. In addition to the usual combination of grammar, vocabulary, spelling and pronunciation for multimedia tutorials, Duolingo uses elements social games to stimulate the user. The developers have done everything to facilitate the long and difficult process of comprehending a foreign language.

About linguistic components Duolingo we won't talk for a long time. Before us is a standard tutorial with a more or less legible pronunciation - from which, however, your tutor will grimace. When Duolingo marketers equate a year of classes with an application to a college course, they mean the college of Alabama or North Carolina, where you can really learn French, but it’s still better not to go to Paris with it. As in any tutorial, in Duolingo you can find humorous features (the abundance of examples in the spirit of “the kitchen is in the center of the prison is impressive”) and serious shortcomings (the meaning of new words is extremely sparingly explained, and for normal work, those who want to learn French have to buy a decent dictionary Editions Larousse ).

You can study simultaneously on a tablet, smartphone and website Duolingo- for this, a single user profile is created. The material is very clearly divided into sections of exercises from all areas human life("directions", "feelings", "numbers"). Performing and repeating exercises is easy and convenient - at least until the online connection is lost. When offline, Duolingo stops recognizing voice input and giving prompts. Reminders in the mail and direct notifications on the tablet and smartphone will not let you be lazy (how can you look an owl instructor in the eyes later?). You can consolidate the material in online duels with other students (it's nice to win) or moderately pliable bots. (Unfortunately, you can't compete with other users and artificial intelligence in the Android app - you can only measure your points.)

IN Duolingo there are other healthy game elements - "pumping" the levels of the language being studied, competition with friends and "lingot" ingots received for completed tasks. There is not much to spend them on in the store: a couple of outfits for an owl and additional sections “idioms” and “flirting”. But the very fact of the possibility of buying additional hearts to save an overwhelmed exercise makes it beneficial to recall Konami Code and Contra.

LinguaLeo (Android, iOS, Windows Phone)

LinguaLeo is a complex of mobile applications and a web interface that allows Russian-speaking users to learn English (and, unfortunately, only English). Like most similar services, it has very wide possibilities for choosing methods, topics and pace of study. The element of gamification here is a lion cub that needs to be “fed” with successful language training. For all useful exercises he gains experience and levels (however, they are not very inspiring and just add new titles).

Every new unfamiliar word LinguaLeo enters into your personal dictionary to remind you later to exercise. You can either add new words and established phrases in the application yourself or look for them among the countless texts in the Jungle (usually short stories, stories or articles) that are categorized (Beginners, All Time Top 100, Business English, and more). In addition, you can directly tell the application the topic you want to study if you are not yet ready to read the texts. It is worth noting here that LinguaLeo focuses on the volume of your vocabulary, and you can gain knowledge about (for example) the arrangement of words in sentences only as you read ready-made texts.

Workouts in LinguaLeo are divided into several types: "Word - translation" (on the screen appears English word and several translation options into Russian), “Translation is a word” (vice versa), “Word constructor” (you need to translate Russian word and compose its English counterpart from letters), "Listening" (a test for understanding oral speech), "Vocabulary cards" (the app just shows the words, and you press "I remember" or "I don't remember"; it's better to be honest with yourself) and "Leo-Sprint" (in 30 seconds you have to correctly answer the maximum amount questions about whether the words are translated correctly; at the end, the application reports your position in the rating of all users). All words are reproduced for listening comprehension (sometimes, however, not quite clearly - the sound engine has problems) and have small (and often funny) illustrations.

Now about payment. In the application itself, you can buy only the so-called. "Gold status" (129 rubles per month or 990 rubles per year). It allows you to add words to study without restrictions (otherwise you will have to wait; however, if you do not plan to study English for several hours a day, then there will be no problems), opens the “Listening” mode and allows you to play “Leo-Sprint” more than three times in a day. It’s a pity, but specialized courses (“Grammar for Beginners”, “English for Tourists”, and so on) can only be bought and taken on the lingualeo.com website itself, but it is also well optimized for use on mobile devices.

Recommend LinguaLeo- like other applications, by the way - we would not become the only means of teaching the language: it lacks integrity and a full-fledged program for this. But beginners will like it, and children especially.

Memrise (Android, iOS)

Don't get too carried away with "gamification". Learning a language is, first of all, diligence, memory and constant expansion of vocabulary. You can know how this or that construction is built, master intonation and pronunciation brilliantly, but without knowledge of vocabulary, nothing will work. Here comes to the rescue Memrise. This is a multifunctional memorization app various information. Everything works as simple as possible. If you have no problems with gestures, but there are gaps in Italian, it's time to download the learning app on mobile device and devote free time to your favorite language.

HelloTalk

The application allows you to choose 1 of 100 foreign languages in which you will communicate directly with a native speaker of this language. No theory, just practice.
