The zodiac sign on the ascendant line of your natal chart is your ascendant sign.

You can calculate the lagna without a natal chart. To do this you need to know exact time birth of a person, since the ascendant is quite mobile: it moves to the next zodiac sign in just 2 hours (for comparison: for the Sun it takes a month, for the Moon - 2.5 days).
