Everyone knows about the creative heritage each country has from its ancient ancestors. For any people it can be safely put at the top cultural heritage of all times, for here the wisdom of generations and even the self-awareness of the people as a single whole are manifested to the greatest extent. Its author is a people who pass on different knowledge from generation to generation. What’s most interesting is that this includes music, theatrical performances, and the so-called catchphrases, and sayings, and proverbs, and riddles, and songs, and epics, and fairy tales. This heritage is oral folk art.

Interesting facts about rowan

Rowan is a genus of deciduous frost-resistant shrubs and trees of the Rosaceae family. The botanical name of mountain ash is Sorbus aucuparia, the generic name comes from the Celtic word “sor”, which means “tart”, and the specific name comes from the Latin “aucupari”, translated “to catch birds”. It seems that the name came from birds feasting on rowan fruits. There are more than 100 species of rowan in the world (according to some estimates, almost two hundred, with about a third of the species growing in countries former USSR. Rowan is widespread not only in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, but throughout Europe and Asia, as well as in North America.

The Legend of the Rowan

One day the daughter of a rich merchant fell in love simple guy, but her father did not want to hear about such a poor groom. To save his family from shame, he decided to resort to the help of a sorcerer. His daughter accidentally found out about this and the girl decided to run away from her home. On a dark and rainy night, she hurried to the river bank to the meeting place with her beloved. At the same hour the sorcerer also left the house. But the guy noticed the sorcerer. In order to take the danger away from the girl, the brave young man rushed into the water. The sorcerer waited until he swam across the river and waved his magic staff when the young man was already climbing out to the shore. Then lightning flashed, thunder struck, and the guy turned into an oak tree. All this happened in front of the girl, who was a little late to the meeting place because of the rain. And the girl also remained standing on the shore. Her slender figure became the trunk of a rowan tree, and her arms—branches—stretched out towards her beloved. In the spring she puts on a white outfit, and in the fall she sheds red tears into the water, sad that “the river is wide, you cannot cross, the river is deep, but you cannot drown.” So there are two lonely trees standing on different banks, loving each other. And “it’s impossible for a rowan tree to move to an oak tree; apparently, an orphan’s eyelids can swing alone.”

There is a shadow on the path,

Solar grid.

Through the tyn, through the fence

A branch hung down.

I'll come running, I'll gallop,

I'll stand up on my toes,

I’ll grab the branch by the braids,

I'll get the berries.

I'll sit by the fence

And on silk

I'll carefully string it down

Rowan berry.

Put on bitter beads,

Branch, branch!

There is a shadow on the path,

Solar grid.

I found my rowan tree

To which I dedicated a song,

With which Russian grief

Here in a foreign land I shared.

In a smart red sundress,

Under the brilliance of a sunny day,

Even more magnificent, even more blush

My beauty looks.

I knew you, my rowan.

You sat on the outskirts of the village

Above the gray barn roof

It grew under the northern sky.

You were tormented by bad weather,

And you - in spite of all sorrows -

Grew and grew stronger year after year,

Looking into the lake glass.

And by winter the mountain ash has shed its outfit,

The bright red clusters on the branches are burning.

We are not afraid of cold, blizzards, and blizzards.

Rowan

Through the thin ice of the window glass,

Among the crooked mirrors of shop windows and lanterns

One appears, graceful and familiar,

Rowan is a beacon and the pulse of autumn days.

It grows stubbornly upward, and it’s hard to believe

What's the difference between smiles and hopes?

That the city was burning with frost, and the wind was sending sadness -

The fragile leaf is transparent, and the berry taste is fresh.

And maybe more than once she will remember how a blizzard

Wandered at night, bending to the ground,

And in the rustle of branches - the warmth of a friend’s embrace,

And the sincere motive is akin to my soul.

The rain will open its eyelids and run along the buildings,

Dropping hundreds of arrows in a dank veil -

A stormy day is warmed by rowan tree breath,

And a scarlet beacon is burning in my window...

I knew you, my rowan...

You sat on the outskirts of the village

The soldier walked, a daring fellow,

The brave fellow walked for seven winters,

He played brave songs,

But hops didn’t help him at all.

The soldier left home for a long time,

And I planted a rowan tree at the gate,

He told her wait for me

My dear bride.

The soldier served far from home.

And the house has been empty for a long time,

And the yard has long been overgrown with grass.

And only rowan on my native side,

Everything pulls branches towards the soldier in the spring,

After all, he said wait for me,

My wife is a mountain ash.

Yes, in battle the soldier found death,

In a dashing battle he was cut down by death,

Goodbye, the last moan flies,

Goodbye, he whispers to the rowan tree.

My widow rowan.

And the leaves fell from that rowan tree,

She is dead from grief, from bitterness,

The news came to her, just wait for me,

My widow rowan.

- “My dear mother!

No matter how much I traveled in the service,

I have never seen such a marvel:

Like in a field, between three roads,

Between three roads, four sides,

How I stood under the mountain ash,

Curly, curly,

Without the wind, the rowan tree staggered,

Without the rain, the mountain ash became wet,

Without a whirlwind, the rowan bends to the ground,

You can get caught by your black curls!”

Ballad of Rowan

Tatyana Reva

Green outfit, lace cape –

The rowan blossomed in the spring at the gate,

She blossomed, looked pretty, was proud of herself

And I fell in love with the song of the spring wind.

And he, fidgety, like someone confused,

He rustled in her leaves, tangled them affectionately,

He circled above her, cheerful and gentle,

And at night I fell asleep under green clothes.

And early at dawn, only the birds began to sing,

He rushed off to the edge of the forest, where there were pines and spruces,

In the spring forest, cobwebs are tearing, shawls

Rowan waited that the next night

The velvet of carved petals will cover them.

But he didn't return. Thunderstorms shouted at her,

That he ruffles the curls of a beauty - a birch tree.

The rowan tree was left alone, sad,

Dropped flower petals on the sand,

Only summer sun it warmed her,

Yes, the dew gently washed me in the morning.

After summer came the artist autumn

And, mixing the summer sky with gray,

As if dressed up for a forest festival

And she gave red clusters to rowan trees.

Then the prankster returned - the rake,

He rushed to the mountain ash from the distant forest.

He whispered that he missed her all summer

And again he rushed off somewhere at dawn.

And again there is only one rowan tree at the gate,

Everything looks like autumn, I'm soaked to the skin,

Under the autumn wind, her slender frame bowed

And she dropped the yellow leaves into herself.

And after the rains came blizzards,

The ground was covered with cold snow.

Frost - the sorcerer flew in on the blue night,

Wrapped the trees in silver frost.

There was a rowan tree, frozen from the cold

And she gave bright berries to the birds.

But soon the blizzards will sing their songs

And again, to the sound of spring drops.

Buds will appear on the rowan branches,

Carved leaves will burst out of them,

Rowan will wave her lace cape

And he will wait for the wind at the same gate.

There are more than 100 species of rowan in the world (according to some estimates, almost two hundred), with about a third of the species growing in the countries of the former USSR. Rowan is widespread not only in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, but throughout Europe and Asia, as well as in North America.

The Legend of the Rowan

One day, the daughter of a rich merchant fell in love with a simple guy, but her father did not want to hear about such a poor groom.

Folk signs associated with rowan:

It became very sad.

Little sprout, you grow faster!
The sun's rays warm the tree.
I remember about the mountain ash, I always remember,
She is still alive in my memory.

I see a slender rowan tree in the yard,
Emerald on the branches in the morning at dawn.

"Rowan"

Red berry
Rowan gave me.
I thought it was sweet
And she is like a hina.

Is it this berry?
I'm just immature
Is it the cunning rowan tree?
Did you want to make a joke?
(Irina Tokmakova)

In Russia in the last century, there was a custom when building a new house to plant young mountain ash next to it. Rowan was supposed to protect the house from all sorts of machinations of evil spirits. Northern peoples Rowan was assigned the role of a soothsayer. They compared her to a young, beautiful, often sad girl.

Rowan, rowan,
Who did you love?
-I loved everyone
I pleased everyone
Ripe berries
She treated everyone.
Pick a berry too
Don't be afraid.
(Russian-Narrative)

****************

Winter has bouquets of snowflakes,
Like foliage, frosty patterns.
And only bright red rowan
Argues heatedly with infinitely white.

Snowstorms are no problem for her.
And the winds will not hide her fire.
On a huge sheet of snow
Small drops of scarlet blood.

An old raven, wise in life
Will not understand the natural riddle -
Why don't your brushes fade in the cold?
Are these berries bittersweet?

Apparently summer wasn't enough for them,
And autumn died away quickly,
And they burn with furious intensity
In December there are rowan sparkles.

Rowan

Rowan
Chopped
Zorka.
Rowan -
Destiny
Bitter.
Rowan -
Gray-haired
Downhill.
Rowan!
Destiny
Russian.

They cut down the rowan before winter.
They cut down the whole world without love.
They chopped it up, forgetting how beautiful it is
it was blooming by the ravine.
They chopped it to warm the body
its branches and bark.
They chopped it down and forgot about it,
that firewood doesn’t warm the soul

Rowan

Red brush
The rowan tree lit up.
Leaves were falling.
I was born.

Hundreds argued
Kolokolov.
The day was Saturday:
John the Theologian.

To this day I
I want to gnaw
Roast rowan
Bitter brush.

Rowan

Even though winter has its feather beds
Spread it out by the rowan tree,
And the frost blows all around,
The berry is turning bright red!

*****************

Rowan

Rowan is sad and lonely
Among birch friends
About the cedar, which is in a distant land
I found oblivion in the singing of blizzards.

He is lulled by the powerful elements,
My vision was clouded with fog.
Rowan is waiting for him in vain,
Decorate the outfit with beads.

*****************

Rowan

Matinees have become more frequent
Sprinkle handfuls of silver,
And the rowan in the dark thicket
Saved the generosity of summer.
Our cheeks from the frost
They begin to bloom brighter,
In man, apparently, too
There is something from rowan.

****************

Boring picture!
Endless clouds
The rain keeps pouring down
Puddles by the porch...
Stunted rowan
Gets wet under the window
Looks at the village
A gray spot.
Why are you visiting early?
Has autumn come to us?
The heart still asks
Light and warmth!….

Rowan

Lots of red berries
Ripe and beautiful

Hanging in clusters
Their outfit is beautiful.
Gather a string of berries for the soul,
Rowan beads are very good!

And in winter the rowan trees glow like flames,
Red as rubies, they shine on the branches...
Rowan branches shine with gold,
The sun plays merrily with their leaves.

I’ll look around near the rowan tree.
I see a sprout
Small, but not a flower,
He will grow tall and slender later...

I wake up in the morning, but it’s still dark.
The slender rowan tree was cut down a long time ago.
I didn't know this
It became very sad.

Little sprout, you grow faster!
The sun's rays warm the tree.
I remember about the mountain ash, I always remember,
She is still alive in my memory.

I see a slender rowan tree in the yard,
Emerald on the branches in the morning at dawn.

Poems about rowan

I knew you, my rowan...
You sat on the outskirts of the village
Above the gray barn roof
It grew under the northern sky.
You were tormented by bad weather,
And you - in spite of all sorrows -
Grew and grew stronger year after year,
Looking into the lake glass.

******************
Rowan grows in his garden.
A sadness lives in his house.
He is wearing a worn-out caftan.
Eyes shrouded in fog
As if filled with saffron
Face, and bent skinny figure.

Dear hope is killed,
And what is his protection from harm?
Fate tells him to endure.
In front of his sad house,
The hostile power of the sworn,
The bitter rowan stands.

Rowan

The soldier walked, a daring fellow,
The brave fellow walked for seven winters,
He played brave songs,
But hops didn’t help him at all.

The soldier left home for a long time,
And I planted a rowan tree at the gate,
He told her wait for me
My dear bride.

The soldier served far from home.
And the house has been empty for a long time,
And the yard has long been overgrown with grass.

And only rowan on my native side,
Everything pulls branches towards the soldier in the spring,
After all, he said wait for me,
My wife is a mountain ash.

Yes, in battle the soldier found death,
In a dashing battle he was cut down by death,
Goodbye, the last moan flies,
Goodbye, he whispers to the rowan tree.

My widow rowan.
And the leaves fell from that rowan tree,
She is dead from grief, from bitterness,
The news came to her, just wait for me,
My widow rowan.

Song: Thin Rowan

Why are you standing there swaying?
Thin rowan
Bowing my head
All the way to the tyn
Bowing my head
All the way to the tyn

And across the road
Beyond the wide river
Just as lonely
The oak stands tall

How about the rowan tree?
Move to the oak tree
I wouldn't do it then
Bend and swing
I wouldn't do it then
Bend and swing.

For medical purposes Rowan has been used since ancient times. IN Ancient Rome it was used to strengthen the stomach. In Russian folk medicine Jam was made from the fruits as a sedative, infusions from the fruits were made as a diuretic, gastric and hemostatic. Not only fruits, but also leaves are used as multivitamins. Rowan bark was used to treat liver diseases. Traditional healers considered rowan one of the main healing plants. In modern medicine, fresh and dry rowan fruits are recommended for vitamin deficiency. Juice from fresh berries is used for low acidity stomach, tincture of fruits - as a means of increasing appetite. Rowan fruit powder is included in the diet for patients diabetes mellitus and obesity.

Use in cosmetics. Rowan fruits are used as a disinfectant. Nutritious masks are prepared from mashed fresh fruits with cream or sour cream; a decoction of dried fruits can be used to rinse hair after washing for seborrhea.

Disinfecting effect. Rowan leaves have a strong phytoncidal effect. In the North, in the summer, sick people were taken out under the rowan tree, because they believed that “the spirit of the rowan tree drives away diseases.”
And chopped leaves were used to store vegetables and fruits. Even the Greeks and Romans noticed that rowan fruits have disinfectant properties. Our ancestors also discovered this property. In order to keep the water drinkable for a long time, they threw a rowan branch into it, after which the water acquired a pleasant taste and did not spoil for quite a long time. In the same way, nowadays it is recommended to use rowan leaves to disinfect water while hiking.

Rowan has mystical power: by giving us its energy, it improves a person’s health, helps to find one’s purpose and achieve harmony with the world around us. Any crafts made from wood and rowan bark will give you good luck and success and protect you from evil.

In Russia in the last century, there was a custom: when laying a new house, plant young mountain ash next to it. Rowan was supposed to protect the house from all sorts of machinations of evil spirits. Northern peoples assigned the role of a soothsayer to the mountain ash. They compared her to a young, beautiful, often sad girl.

In the beliefs of the Slavic peoples, it is believed that the rowan tree worries about the birds and animals of the forest, and thus helps them survive winter cold. Rowan is eaten by tits, sparrows, bullfinches, waxwings, pigeons, robins, thrushes, bee-eaters, black grouse, and hazel grouse.

Conclusions on signs

We were only able to verify two signs:

  • Sign “There are a lot of rowan trees in the forest - autumn will be rainy, if there are few - it will be dry.”

This sign was confirmed; according to our observations, reflected in the research diaries, this fall there were more rainy days than usual.

  • Sign “If there were a lot of red rowan, then the winter will come harsh.”

This sign was not confirmed, the rowan harvest was really high, the rowan trees were strewn with berries, but the severity of the winter was not confirmed. On the contrary, the winter turned out to be snowy and warm. And the berry harvest is explained more quickly weather conditions, favorable for the ripening of the berries of this plant.
