How to Pray on Memorial Day

Meaning of the 17th kathisma. During all forty days after the death of a person, his relatives and friends should read the Psalter. How many kathismas a day depends on the time and strength of the readers, but reading must certainly be daily. When the entire Psalter has been read, it is read from the beginning. Just do not forget that after each "Glory" you need to read prayer petition about the commemoration of the deceased from "Following the Exodus of the Soul from the Body".

Many relatives and friends of the deceased, referring to the fact that there is no time or no skill in reading Church Slavonic, entrust this reading to others (readers) for a fee or other reward. God hears this prayer too. But the prayer will be stronger, sincere, purer, if the relative or close to the deceased person himself asks God to have mercy on the deceased. You should not spare time and effort to learn how to read Church Slavonic and then read the Psalter yourself.

On the third, ninth and fortieth days, a special kathisma should be read according to the deceased (it includes only the 118th psalm). They call her funeral. And in the liturgical books - "Immaculate", according to the word found in its first verse: Blessed are the blameless in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.

The Jews had such a custom: during the Paschal supper and at the end of it, they sing psalms and mainly psalm 118, dedicated to the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. According to legend, Christ and his disciples left the house where the Last Supper was being celebrated, while singing a psalm, apparently, just this: And having sung, they went to the Mount of Olives(Matthew 26:30)

Poem Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justification(Ps. 119:12) is always sung by the Church at the burial of the dead, and the kathisma (118th psalm) is read in their days special commemoration.

This kathisma depicts the blessedness of those who walked in the law of the Lord (that is, the blessedness of righteous people who tried to live according to the commandments of God). Here is a translation of some verses from this 118th psalm: How I love your law! I've been thinking about it all day. By Your commandment You have made me wiser than my enemies, for it is always with me. I have become more intelligent than all my teachers, for I meditate on Your revelations. I know more than the elders, for I keep your precepts. I keep my feet from every evil way, that I may keep thy word.(Ps. 119:97-101).

1st, 2nd, 12th, 22nd, 25th, 29th, 37th, 58th, 66th, 72nd, 73rd, 88th verses of the kathisma are read with the refrain: “God give rest to the soul of the departed (s) Thy servant (Thy servant).”

The final verses of the first half of the kathisma (92nd, 93rd): If it were not for your law to be my comfort, I would have perished in my distress. I will never forget your commandments, for by them you give me life - are sung three times. After that, the chorus is repeated again.

In the second part of the kathisma (after the word "Wednesday") verses 94, 107, 114, 121, 131, 132, 133, 142, 153, 159- th, 163rd, 170th are read with the refrain: "God give rest to the soul of the departed (s) Thy servant (Thy servant)." In conclusion, the final verses of the 118th psalm (175th, 176th) are sung three times: May my soul live and praise You, and may Your judgments help me. I have gone astray like a lost sheep: seek thy servant, for I have not forgotten thy commandments. After them, the refrain is repeated again with a request to repose the soul of the one for whom they pray.

After "Glory" a prayer request is read. After the kathisma, the prescribed troparia are read (they are indicated immediately after the 118th psalm in the prayer book), and after them the 50th psalm and the troparia are immaculate, or the troparia for the repose (there are eight in total) with a refrain to each verse from the 118th psalm: Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justification.

Let's get a grasp of these troparia (in Church Slavonic and Russian).

1) You will find the source of life and the door of paradise: let me find the way with repentance; I am a lost sheep, call me, Savior, and save me ).

Chorus: Blessed are You, Lord! Teach me your statutes.

2) who preached the Lamb of God, and slaughtered the former, like lambs, and to an ageless life, holy, and eternally reposed; That diligently, martyrs, pray, grant us permission to grant debts (Holy martyrs, who preached the Lamb of God and were themselves slain like sheep, and moved to where life does not grow old and does not change forever, pray Him fervently that He would grant us the forgiveness of sins).

Chorus.

3) On the path of a narrow walker, mournful, all in life, the cross, like a yoke, lifted up, and following me by faith, come, enjoy, they have prepared for you honor, and crowns of heaven (All of you who walked the narrow and bitter path, which in time earthly life they carried the cross like a yoke, followed me with faith! Come, enjoy the rewards that I have prepared for you, and be crowned with heavenly crowns).

Chorus.

4) I am the inexpressible image of Your glory, even if I bear the ulcers of sins: have mercy on Your creation, Lord, and cleanse with Your goodness, and grant me a desired Fatherland, creating a paradise for a resident of me (Although I wear the ulcers of sins on myself, but still I - a reflection of Your inexpressible language with human glory. Master! Chorus.

5) Of old, from those who do not exist, you created me, and in the image of Your Divine honors, by the crime of the commandment, you again returned me to the earth, from what was taken, on a hedgehog in the likeness, build up, with ancient kindness (You, who first created me from non-existence and adorned with Your In a divine way, but for the violation of the commandment, you again returned me to the earth from which I was taken, raise me up so that the former perfection is reflected in me).

Chorus.

6) Give rest, O God, to Thy servant and make him in paradise, where the faces of the saints, Lord, and the righteous shine like lights: give rest to the departed servant of Thy, despising all his sins (God! the saints and the righteous shine like the luminaries (heavenly).Lord, give rest to the deceased servant, leaving (putting in nothing) all his sins).

Glory.

7) The Triradiant One Deity we piously sing out loud: Holy Thou, Father Without Beginning, Unoriginate Son and Divine Soul, enlighten us, who serve Thee by faith, and seek the eternal fire (Let us reverently sing with the triple light of the radiant one God, crying out: “Holy are You, Father without beginning, and the Son without beginning, and the Divine Spirit! Enlighten us, who serve Thee by faith, and deliver the eternal fire").

And now.

8) Rejoice, pure one, who gave birth to God in the flesh for the salvation of all, by whom the human race will find salvation, by you we will find paradise, pure, blessed Mother of God! (Rejoice, Pure One, who gave birth to God in the flesh for the salvation of all; You, through Whom the human race was saved! Pure, Blessed Mother of God! May we also find paradise through You).

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God (thrice).

After these troparions, "Following the Exodus of the Soul from the Body" is read.

It should be noted that in the church during the memorial service, the 17th kathisma is divided into two halves (articles) and it is read somewhat differently than at home.

Days of special commemoration of all the dead Orthodox Christians. The Russian people have a custom to call the deceased, their own and others, old and small, parents. The expression "to go to your parents" means to go to the graves of the dead.

The idea of the deceased as "parents", that is, already belonging to the family of the fathers to whom they have departed, awakens in us reverence for their memory. On some days - on Saturdays - an ecumenical commemoration of the dead is performed. These days are called parent Saturdays.

On Saturday, and not on other days, a prayer for the dead is supposed because the Orthodox Church has established this way: on every Saturday of the week, on the day of rest, it is customary to commemorate their dead relatives and friends.

How to remember? In every Orthodox prayer book at the end morning prayers There are detailed prayers for the living and the dead. We will not be too lazy to read this small commemoration for our deceased relatives, naming their names, adding a prayer request for their repose from the “Following the Exodus of the Soul from the Body”.

The days of special (pure) commemoration of the dead are five ecumenical Saturdays.

Meatless Parental Universal Saturday happens two weeks before Lent. On this day, the Holy Church prays for all Orthodox Christians who have died sudden death: during the flood, earthquake, wars, etc.

Trinity Ecumenical Parental Saturday happens before the day of the Holy Trinity (on the 49th day after Easter). On this day, the memory of all the departed pious Christians is celebrated.

Parental second, third and fourth Saturdays of Great Lent. Instead of a daily commemoration of the dead during the Divine Liturgy, which does not happen during Great Lent, the Holy Church decided to make an intensified commemoration on these three Saturdays.

There are also private parent days.

Tuesday of St. Thomas' week. The week is called Thomas because the Apostle Thomas is remembered on it. Tuesday itself in the Russian people is called Radonica: on this day, the living rush to the cemetery to greet their dead parents with the joyful news of the Resurrection of the Lord. The living christen with the dead, bringing painted eggs to the graves. This is the ninth day after Easter (the second Tuesday after Easter).

- September 11 (according to the new style), on the day of the Beheading of John the Baptist(strict fasting is required), a commemoration is made Orthodox warriors, for faith and the fatherland on the battlefield of the slain. The commemoration of Orthodox soldiers was established in the Russian Church in 1769 by decree of Empress Catherine II, during the war with the Turks and Poles.

Dimitriev parental Saturday takes place a week before November 8 according to the new style (commemoration day of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica). It was established by the right-believing Grand Duke Dimitry Donskoy. Having won the famous victory at Kulikovo Field on September 8, 1380, Saint Prince Demetrius performed a commemoration of the fallen soldiers before the day of his Angel. Grand Duke invited the Church to make this commemoration every year, and the people called this Saturday Demetrius.

Subsequently, on the day of the Beheading of John the Baptist and on Demetrius Saturday, they began to commemorate not only Orthodox soldiers, but along with them all the dead.

On these days, order a mass or commemoration at the proskomedia for your deceased loved ones. Proskomedia translated from Greek means "offering". In order to order a commemoration at the proskomedia, a Christian in the church needs to fill out a sheet with the heading "On Repose", which lists the names of the dead (baptized into Orthodoxy and not committed suicide).

On parental days, visit the graves of the dead, come to church, pray during a memorial service for their repose, read the 17th kathisma at home, commemorate the dead during the meal. It will be good if you do all this with your children. If they are small, take out an album with photographs, remember your grandfather, grandmother, other relatives with them, tell us what you know about them. Teach your children at least short prayer turn to God: "God give rest to the souls of your departed servants, all our relatives and friends, and grant them the Kingdom of Heaven."

memorial meal

The pious custom of commemorating the dead at a meal has been known for a very long time. This custom is described by the prophet Jeremiah: the ancient Jews had a habit of consoling about the deceased break bread for them(see: Jer. 16: 7). words break bread for them the prophet testifies that commemorating the dead with bread, and even more so with prayers, is beneficial for the souls of the deceased.

But how exactly at the dinner table to commemorate the deceased relatives? What to read? How to behave? Difficult questions. It is no coincidence that many commemorations turn for relatives only into an occasion to get together, discuss last news, delicious food, while Orthodox Christians and memorial meal should pray for their brothers in faith.

This chapter provides advice and suggestions on this matter. various people living by faith. These are not church rules, not the Charter, but a generalized experience of commemorating the dead.

1. If the commemoration (third, ninth, fortieth days, anniversary) falls during Great Lent, then in the first, fourth and seventh weeks of fasting, relatives and friends of the deceased do not invite anyone. These weeks are especially strict. Let only the closest ones be at the table: mother or father, wife or spouse, children or grandchildren.

If memorial days fall on weekdays of other weeks of Great Lent (that is, except for the first, fourth and seventh), then they are transferred to the next (upcoming) Saturday or Sunday. This is called a counter commemoration. This is done because public holidays Great Lent is considered to be Saturdays and Sundays: only on these days are Divine Liturgies St. Basil the Great (Saturday) and St. John Chrysostom (Sunday).

2. If the commemoration falls on the Bright Week (the first week after Easter), then in these first eight days after Easter, prayers for the dead are not read, no memorial services are performed for them. Instead of a memorial service, the Easter canon is sung in the Church.

The Orthodox Church allows to commemorate the dead from Tuesday of St. Thomas' week (the second week after Easter): from that day on, in the church for the deceased, you can order a magpie, mass, proskomidia and a memorial service.

From the day of Pascha until Tuesday of St. Thomas' week, only the Paschal canon is read to the deceased at home. 3
The text of the Easter Canon can be found in almost every Orthodox prayer book.

3. You should not commemorate the deceased at the table with vodka or other alcoholic beverages (even if the deceased person liked to drink!). Commemorations are days of grief, intense prayer for the soul of the deceased, which, perhaps, is very difficult. So will it really be easier for the soul in that world if we here delight ourselves with wine?

5. A memorial meal, which is arranged by the relatives and friends of the deceased, is a kind of almsgiving for everyone who is present at it. From here comes the desire of the owners to treat everyone tastier, more satisfying. But we must observe the fasting days established by the Church. The dead are commemorated with the food that is laid on the day of the commemoration on Wednesday, Friday, on the days of long fasts - fasting, on the meat-eater - fast food.

6. Before the memorial meal, the 17th kathisma is read. Prayers are read in front of holy icons, in front of a lit lampada or candles. At this time, a petition to have mercy on the deceased should sound with special force.

Between the serving of the next dishes, they read the following prayer: “Seeing me silent and breathless, cry for me, brethren and friends, relatives and knowledge: yesterday I talked with you, and suddenly find me a terrible hour of death. But come, all who love me, and kiss me with the last kiss: I will not resemble you or talk to anyone else: I will go to the Judge, where there is no partiality: the servant and the lord together are coming, the king and the warrior, the rich and the poor in equal dignity: each one will either be glorified or put to shame by his deeds. But I ask everyone and pray: unceasingly pray for me to Christ God, that I will not be brought down by my sin to a place of torment, but that he will bring me where the light of the animal is” (in Russian: “Brothers, friends and acquaintances, seeing how I lie silent and breathless, weep for me. How long have I been talking to you? And how soon the hour of death came upon me. Oh, all you who loved me! Come, give me the last kiss; I will no longer be and talk with you because I am going to the Judge, Who has no partiality, before Whom the servant and the master, the king and the warrior, the rich and the poor stand on an equal footing - all are equal, and each for his deeds will either be glorified or put to shame. But I ask and implore everyone : Pray unceasingly for me to Christ, so that I would not be cast into a place of torment for my sins, but that He would instill me where the light of life is.

This prayer is read or sung on the third, ninth and fortieth days of commemoration, when all the circumstances of the funeral are still alive and bright in the memory of relatives. On anniversaries and on parental days, this prayer, as usual, is no longer read.

On any days of commemoration, such prayers are read: “Glory, and now”; “By the prayers of the Birth of Thee, Christ, and Thy Forerunner, the apostles, prophets, hierarchs, reverend and righteous, and all the saints, repose thy departed servant”; "Virgin Virgin".

At the end of the memorial meal, ask God for all the dead: “Grant, Lord, forgiveness of sins to all who have departed in the faith and the hope of resurrection, our fathers, brothers and sisters, and create eternal memory for them”; " Everlasting memory» (thrice). This is followed by a brief petition, with which the Savior Himself ended His last meal in earthly life: “Blessed be Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justification.”

7. Immediately before the start of the memorial meal, the prayer "Our Father" is read. The first dish, which, by right of kinship and closeness to the deceased, is first tasted by his closest relatives and friends, is kutya. These are boiled wheat grains mixed with honey. If there is no wheat and honey, then boiled rice with raisins is used. Grains serve as a symbol of resurrection, and honey or raisins are sweets enjoyed by the righteous in the Kingdom of Heaven. Kutya is consecrated in the temple during a memorial service.

Then kutya is gradually tasted by all those present. It is served, according to custom, on the third, ninth and fortieth days of commemoration.

After a meal, thanksgiving prayers are read: “We thank Thee, Christ our God”, “It is worthy to eat”.

8. The most important thing is to pray for the repose and pardon of the soul of a deceased person. It may happen that there will be nothing left in the house except water and crackers, there will not even be kutya. Would the commemoration be worse? If there is no prayer book in the house, then read those prayers that you know from memory, turn to God in your own words, if only your sighing for the souls of the dead came from the heart. If there is a prayer book, it is better to pray for it, as above.

Praying (taking part in reading, singing prayers) is necessary for everyone who gathered at the memorial meal, for, where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them(Matthew 18:20).

Let us remember that God who knows the heart judges not only deeds, but also intentions. And if we are serious, if we are ready to work hard (and prayer is work!) for the repose of the souls of our departed, if we believe that through our prayer labors, through our faith and almsgiving, relief will come to those for whom we pray, then God, we will hope, and hear us, because it was said by the Savior Himself: And whatever you ask in prayer with faith, you will receive(Matthew 21:22).

Preparation for death

Most important question. What does it mean to die like a Christian? Pleading Litany.

The most important question. Of the many questions that one can ask oneself about our life on earth, perhaps the most important one is about how best to prepare for death.

Father! into your hands I commit my spirit(Luke 23:46), such were last words Lord from the Cross. Will these be our last words? And what will we get before our death? We must always be ready for death and try to depart from this world so that our very death will be a testament to our faith and love for the Lord and, if possible, a lesson for our loved ones.

Our Savior gave us the best example. Did he not suffer on the Cross? Was his death not terrible and even shameful in the eyes of the whole world? And despite what patience, what love for one's neighbor, what infinite forgiveness, what devotion to the will of God! Like this, each of us must die.

What does it mean to die like a Christian? If we feel the approach of death, we will try to find the courage to end our life with dignity.

While the cruel illness, infirmity has not yet completely twisted, let's think about our already past life, remember that shameful thing, which, perhaps, we forgot to repent of or still did not dare. And then we will make a decision for at least three days (for seriously ill patients - one day) to fast, read (or have them read to us) prayers of repentance, and prepare for Communion.

Before communion, let us reconcile with those who were our enemy, ill-wisher, and ask for forgiveness from the one whom we offended ourselves.

If you still have the strength to come to church, repent of your sins, 4
In the Sacrament of the Unction (Consecration of the Unction), when the body is anointed with consecrated oil, the grace of God is called upon a person, healing the infirmities of the soul and body.

Communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, then we will definitely do so.

About what communion before death means, St. Elijah Minyatiy (t1714) speaks in his sermon “The Greatness of the Sacrament of Holy Communion”: “A star does not shine in the sky like the soul of a Christian shines from the light of the grace of God at the hour when he takes communion. And this is because when we partake, then we become members of the Body of Christ, we unite with Christ. And if our soul were separated from the body at this hour, then it would have received a place for itself with the martyrs, virgins and saints ... My God! My redeemer! Let me die, if it be Your holy will, whether in a deaf forest or in some other desolate place: it doesn’t matter to me, if only before death I would be vouchsafed communion of Your most pure Body and Blood! After all, if at that hour You will be with me, then I am not afraid of death: with such parting words as Your Body and Blood, I strongly hope to reach Your Heavenly Kingdom.

If we become seriously ill, we will ask our relatives to invite a priest to our house.

Let us await our death without grumbling, without indignation, without envy of those who remain to live. This will manifest our courage, and our dignity, and our hope (faith) in the Lord, and surrendering ourselves entirely to the will of God.

Let us give our children and grandchildren the last instruction on how to live, how to bury us, what to clothe (dress) us after death, what to read at our very death, how to pray for us. We will divide our property between relatives so that there will be no grievances between them later. We will give part of our fortune to a donation to the Church or a monastery, to alms in our name. But this is at the very end. And while we are still alive, strong, healthy, let us not forget about death: “The memory of death gives rise to prayer, tears, repentance before God,” the holy fathers teach us.

Pleading Litany. During divine services, we often hear a series of prayer requests, pronounced slowly, protractedly, proclaimed by a deacon or priest on behalf of all those praying. After each petition, the choir sings: “Lord, have mercy!” or “Give me, Lord!”. These are the so-called litanies (from the Greek - "diligent petition").

The petitionary litany begins with the words: "Let us fulfill (bring to fullness, bring in fullness) our morning (or evening) prayer to the Lord (to the Lord)." After each petition of the petitionary litanies, except for the first two, the choir sings: “Give, Lord!”.

When a deacon proclaims in church: “We ask the Lord for the rest of our life in peace and repentance” (in Russian: “Let us ask the Lord that we live the rest of our life in peace and a calm conscience”), then from the bottom of our hearts , sincerely together with the singers we will ask: “Give, Lord!”.

When it will also be proclaimed: “The Christian death of our belly is painless, shameless, peaceful, and we ask for a good answer at the Terrible Judgment of Christ” (in Russian: “Let us ask the Lord that our death be Christian, that is, with confession and communion of the Holy Mysteries , painless, shameless and peaceful, that is, so that before death we make peace with our loved ones.Let us ask for a kind and fearless answer to the Last Judgment”), then we will ask God for such a death.

And let us bow our knees before God, imploring Him in the secret of our heart to grant us the last great (great) mercy in this (and in that future!) life: “Give me, Lord!”.

Friends, the day is coming when believers especially commemorate the dead: relatives, friends, neighbors, parishioners from their church, enemies, finally. In general, everyone:Orthodox and unbaptized. Only the closest people pray for the unbaptized and suicides with special prayers. It is also good to give alms for them. This can be done even by strangers who are not indifferent to such a suicide.
I won’t talk now about how much our prayer is needed by the dead: someone knows himself, others will be able to read about it in the next posts of my diary (I’m quoting little by little very interesting work Hieromonk Seraphim Rose "The Soul After Death", in which these issues will be considered in detail); others can buy an appropriate book in any temple and study it on their own. I can only say that the Orthodox pray for the dead, of course, not only on specially designated days. It’s just that on such days, more prayers are needed for the dead.

So I bring to your attention an excerpt from the Psalter (there is a part in the Bible with that name), accompanied by special prayers. This passage is called by the Orthodox the 17th kathisma. The 17th kathisma is just read on the days of special commemoration of the dead (like the coming day). Another 17th kathisma is read by caring relatives within 40 days after the death of a person, so that it would be easier for him to get to God. It will be beautiful if you have the patience to read the 17th kathisma this Saturday for deceased relatives and friends.

17th kathisma (funeral)

Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of Truth, Who is everywhere and fills everything, Treasury of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Blessed, our souls.

Troparion: Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us; bewildering any answer, we offer this prayer as the Lord of sin: have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Your honorable prophet, O Lord, triumph, heaven, the Church of display, angels rejoice with men: with prayers, Christ God, rule our belly in the world, let us sing to You: Alleluia.

And now and forever and forever and ever, amen. Many of my many, Mother of God, sins, I have come to You, Pure, demanding salvation: visit my infirm soul, and pray to Your Son and our God to give us resignation, even the fiercest deeds, Blessed One.

Lord have mercy. (forty timesand bows according to strength).

Come, let us worship our King God. (Bow)

Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ, our King God.(Bow).

Come, let us worship and bow down to Christ Himself, the King and our God. (Bow)

Psalm 118

Blessed are the blameless on the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who try His testimonies, they will seek Him with all their hearts, who do no iniquity, walking in His ways. Thou hast commanded that Thy commandments be kept green. that my ways may be corrected, keep thy justifications. Then I will not be ashamed, sometimes look upon all Thy commandments. Let us confess to You in the uprightness of our heart, always teach me the destinies of Your righteousness. I will keep your justification: do not leave me to the ground. In what way does the youngest correct his path? Always keep your words. With all my heart I seek You, do not reject me from Your commandments. Thy words are hidden in my heart, as if I would not sin with Thee. Blessed be the Lord, teachme by your justification. My mouth will proclaim all the fate of your mouth. On the path of Your testimonies, enjoy, as if about every wealth. I will sneer at Your commandments, and I will understand Your ways. In Thy justifications I will learn; I will not forget Thy words. Reward Your servant: live me, and I will keep Your words. open my eyes, and I will see miracles from your law. I am a stranger on earth: do not hide your commandments from me. Love my soul, desire Your fate for all time. Thou hast rebuked the proud: Curse those who deviate from Thy commandments. Take away from me diarrhea and humiliation, as if your testimonies were sought. For the princes are sedosha, and they slander me, but Thy servant mocks at Thy justifications. For Thy testimonies are according to my teaching, and advise me Thy justifications. Cling to the earth, my soul, live me according to your word. I have made known my ways, and thou hast heard me: teach me thy justification. Teach me the way of Thy justifications, and I will be mocked at Thy wonders. My soul slumbers from despondency, confirm me in Thy words. Put the way of unrighteousness away from me, and have mercy on me by Your law. I have chosen the path of truth, and I have not forgotten your fate. I have clung to Thy testimonies, O Lord, do not shame me. The way of your commandments is tekoh, when you have expanded my heart. Make law for me, O Lord, the way of Thy justifications, and I will seek and endure. Give me understanding, and I will test Your law, and I will keep it with all my heart. Guide me in the path of Thy commandments, as I desire. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes, hedgehog not to see you, live me in your way. Place Your word in Your fear for Your servant. Take away my reproach, hedgehog, for Thy fate is good. Behold, I have desired Thy commandments, live me in Thy righteousness. And may Thy mercy come upon me, O Lord, Thy salvation according to Thy word; And do not take away from my mouth the word is true to the ground, as if I trusted in Your fate. And I will keep Thy law out, forever and ever. And byI learned in Thy commandments, even though I loved deeply: and lifted up my hands to Thy commandments, even though I loved, and mocked at Thy justifications. Remember your words to your servant, whose hope you gave me. Then comfort me in my humility, as your word live me. Proudly transgressing the law to the bitter end, but I did not deviate from Your law. I have remembered Thy fate from time immemorial, O Lord, and have been comforted. Sorrow is pleasant to me from sinners who leave Your law. Peta hath given me Thy justification in the place of my arrival. Remember your name in the night, O Lord, and keep your law. This be to me, as if your justifications are demanding. Thou art a part of me, O Lord: rech keep thy law. I prayed to Your face with all my heart: have mercy on me according to Your word. Consider Thy ways, And turn my feet to Thy testimonies. Get ready and not be embarrassed, keep the threads of your commandment. Already a sinner is obligated to me, and I have not forgotten Your law. Wake up at midnight, confess to Thee about the destinies of Thy righteousness. I am a partaker of all who fear Thee and keep Thy commandments. Thy mercy, O Lord, fill the earth, teach me Thy justification. Thou hast done goodness with Thy servant, O Lord, according to Thy word. Teach me goodness and punishment and reason, as if by Your commandment of faith. First, do not even humble yourself, I have sinned, for this sake I have kept your word. Thou art good, O Lord, and teach me Thy goodness by Thy justification. Multiply the falsehood of the proud by me, but with all my heart I will test Your commandments. Let their hearts dry up like a little milk, but let them learn Thy law. Good for me, for thou hast humbled me, for I may learn thy justification. Blessed is the law of thy mouth, more than a thousand gold and silver.

(Three times)

Lord have mercy.(Three times)

Thy hands make me and make me, give me understanding, and I will learn Thy commandment. Those who fear You will see me and rejoice, as if they were hoping for Your words. Razumech, Lord, as the truth of Your fate, and truly humbled me. Wake up Your mercy, may it comfort me according to the word of Your servant. Let Thy bounties come to me, and I will live, for Thy law is my teaching. Let them be ashamed of pride, for it is unjustly unlawful against me, but I will mock at Your commandments. May those who fear You and know Your testimonies convert me. Be my heart blameless in Your justifications, for I will not be put to shame. My soul disappears for Your salvation, I hope for Your words. My eyes have disappeared into your word, saying: when will you comfort me? Forget it like a fur on a slan, I didn’t forget your excuses. How many days are there for your servant? When will you create me from those who persecute me? Told me the criminals of mockery, but not like Your law, Lord. All your commandments are true; chasing me unrighteously, help me. Little did not finish my cup on the ground, but I did not leave Your commandments. Free of my mouth, favor, O Lord, and teach me your destinies. I will take my soul into Your hand, and I will not forget Your law. Lay down the net of sinners for me, and I will not go astray from Thy commandments. I have inherited Thy testimonies forever, as the joy of my heart is. Bow down my heart, make Thy justifications forever for recompense. I hate the transgressors, but I love your law. Thou art my helper and intercessor, I trust in thy words. Deviate from me, wicked ones, and I will test the commandments of my God. Intercede for me according to Thy word, and I will live, and do not shame me from my aspiration. Help me, and I will be saved, and I will learn from Your justifications. Thou hast despised all those who deviate from Thy justifications, for their thinking is unrighteous. The sinners of all the sinful earth transgressing, for this sake I love Thy testimonies. Nail my flesh to Thy fear: I am afraid of Thy judgments. Co-create justice and justice, do not betray me to those who offend me. Accept Thy servant for good, so that pride does not slander me. My eyes have disappeared into Your salvation and into the word of Your righteousness: do with Your servant according to Your mercy, and teach me Your justification. I am Thy servant az: mind me, and we will hear Thy testimonies. Time to create the Lord-devi: destroying Your law. For this sake, I love Your commandment more than gold and topaz. For this sake, I have gone to all Your commandments, I have hated every path of unrighteousness. Wonderful is Thy testimony: for this sake I have tried my soul. The manifestation of Your words enlightens and instructs the infants. My mouth was opened, and I attracted the spirit, as if I desired Your commandments.

Amen.

IN Orthodox Church Since ancient times, there has been a pious custom of reading the Psalter for the dead by the believers themselves. The Book of Psalms of the Prophet King David is part of Old Testament and consists of 150 psalms. Not a single service in the temple is complete without reading psalms, psalms are our prayers in sorrow, in calamities, in repentance, in joy, in thanksgiving to the Lord. The psalter is divided into 20 parts, called kathisma. Kathisma, in turn, consists of three parts (three “Glories”), and each of these parts ends with the reading of the prayer “Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever, amen. Alleluia (3 times)". Psalter - a separately published Book of Psalms, along with prayers and instructions, can also be purchased at the temple. Such a reading would be the observance of an ancient, widespread church tradition.

During all forty days after the death of a person, his relatives and friends should read the Psalter. How many kathismas a day depends on the time and strength of the readers, but reading must certainly be daily. When the entire Psalter has been read, it is read from the beginning. Just do not forget that after each "Glory ..." one must read a prayer request for the commemoration of the deceased (from "Following the Exodus of the Soul from the Body"). Many relatives and friends of the deceased, referring to the fact that there is no time or do not have a Psalter, or do not know how to read Church Slavonic, entrust this reading to others (readers) for a fee or other reward. But the prayer will be stronger, sincere, purer, if the relative or close to the deceased person himself asks God to have mercy on the deceased.

On the third, ninth, fortieth days one should read according to the deceased 17th kathisma.

This kathisma depicts the blessedness of those who walked in the law of the Lord, i.e. blessedness of righteous people who tried to live according to the commandments of God.

The meaning and significance of Psalm 118 is revealed in the 19th verse: "I am a stranger (stranger) on earth: do not hide your commandments from me." Explanatory Bible ed. A.P. Lopukhina gives this verse the following explanation: “Life on earth is a wandering, a journey made by a person to reach his fatherland and a permanent, eternal residence. Obviously, the latter is not on earth, but beyond the grave. If so, then earthly life must be prepared for the afterlife, and only the unmistakably chosen path on earth can lead to it. How and where to find the latest? This path is indicated in the commandments of the Law. Whoever does not follow them is deluded and will not reach the afterlife, i.e. afterlife, as a reward for the labors incurred to achieve it. Here is a fairly clear teaching about the purpose of earthly existence, immortality human soul and afterlife rewards".

A number of psalms in the Psalter refer to songs of thanksgiving that are dedicated to a specific event in the life of King David or the Jewish people. Usually the event is associated with a miraculous deliverance from the Lord, and the whole text is a great song of gratitude and praise to the Almighty. Psalm 17 also refers to thanksgiving texts and glorifies the Lord.

History of writing

Earlier in the Bible you can already find the words that make up this song - they are written in the second chapter of Kings chapter 22, although the text is spelled out in the Psalter with great changes, the similarity of thoughts is obvious.

In Psalm 17, David thanks God for his many deliverances.

The inscription of the song indicates that it was written at a time when the persecution of King Saul against the then simple warrior David ended. The young man won a number of successful victories in the battle with the enemies, and the king was forced to stop his attacks on him. The inscription also indicates that the finished text was handed over to the head of the choir to be performed during Jewish services.

Important! The psalmist gives glory to the Lord and glorifies the Almighty for delivering him from persecution and helping him cope with trials. The author here uses the word "slave" to express complete dependence on God.

The interpretation of the psalm

In general, the text describes the torments and trials that befell the psalmist and describes how the Lord removed them and preserved the soul of his anointed one.

A few verses are especially interesting:

On a note! Right there in verses 12-16 in question about the offspring that David will have - this was revealed to him in a prophetic way through Nathan.

Reading Rules

Psalm 17 refers to the third kathisma, which also includes psalms 18-23. A kathisma is read during the Sunday morning service on ordinary, non-holiday days. During Lent, the kathisma is read 2 times in Church Slavonic:

I will love Thee, O Lord, my fortress. The Lord is my affirmation, and my refuge, and my deliverer, my God, my helper, and I trust in him, my protector, and the horn of my salvation, and my intercessor. Praise I will call on the Lord, and I will be saved from my enemies. Mortal illnesses have taken possession of me, and the sweats of iniquity have overwhelmed me, the diseases of hell have overwhelmed me, having preceded me in the nets of death. And when we grieve, I called on the Lord, and I called out to my God, I heard my voice from my holy temple, and my cry before Him will enter into His ears. And the earth was moving, and the earth was trembling, and the foundations of the mountains were tumbling and moving, as if God was angry with me. The smoke of His wrath goes up, and fire is kindled at His face, coal is kindled from Him. And bow the heavens, and from below, and darkness under His feet. And vzde on the Cherubim, and fly, fly on the wings of the wind. And lay down the darkness of Your shelter, His village is around Him, the water is dark in the clouds of the air. Clouds, hail and coals of fire came from the sheen before Him. And the Lord will thunder from Heaven and the Most High will give His voice. I sent down arrows and dispersed me, and multiply lightning and crushed me. And the fountains of water appeared, and the foundations of the universe were revealed, from Thy prohibition, O Lord, from the inspiration of the spirit of Thy wrath. She came down from on high, and welcomed me; she received me from many waters. He will deliver me from my strong enemies and from those who hate me, as if they were more established than me. Foreshadowing me in the day of my wickedness, and the Lord be my confirmation. And he brought me out to the latitude, he will deliver me, as he pleases me. And the Lord will reward me according to my righteousness, and according to the purity of my hand will reward me. As if I had kept the ways of the Lord and not wickedness from my God. As if all His fate is before me and His justification does not depart from me. And I will be blameless with Him, and I will be kept from my iniquity. And the Lord will reward me according to my righteousness and according to the purity of my hand before His eyes. You will be reverend with a reverend, and you will be innocent with an innocent man, and you will be chosen with a chosen one, and you will be depraved with an obstinate one. Like you save the humble people and humble the eyes of the proud. Like you enlighten my lamp, Lord, my God, enlighten my darkness. As if by Thee I will be delivered from temptation and by my God I will cross the wall. My God, His way is blameless, the words of the Lord are kindled, the Defender is all who trust in Him. Like who is God, is it the Lord? Or who is God, except our God? God gird me with strength, and make my way undefiled. Make my feet, like deer, and set me on high. Teach my hands to fight, and thou hast laid the bow of my copper muscle. And you gave me the protection of salvation, and Your right hand will receive me, and Your punishment will correct me to the end, and Your punishment will teach me that. Thou hast widened my feet under me, and my mold is not exhausted. My enemies will reap, and I will comprehend, and I will not return, until they die. I will offend them, and they will not be able to, they will fall under my feet. And you girded me with strength for battle, you slept all those who rose against me under me. And Thou hast given my backbone to my enemies, and Thou hast consumed those who hate me. You cried out, and save them not: to the Lord, and did not hear them. And I will dry up like dust before the face of the wind, like I will stroke the dirt of the paths. Deliver me from the strife of people, put me at the head of tongues. People, they don’t know, they work. In the ear of the ear, listen to me. Alien sons lie to me. The sons of strangers are obedshasha and lame from their paths. As the Lord lives, and blessed is God, and may the God of my salvation be exalted. God give vengeance to me and subdue the people under me. My deliverer from my angry enemies, exalt me from those who rise up against me, deliver me from the unrighteous husband. For this sake, let us confess to Thee in tongues, O Lord, and sing to Thy name: magnify the salvation of the king, and show mercy to His Christ David, and to his seed forever.
Important! Each person experiences various trials and difficulties in his life, for which we are simply obliged to thank the Lord. This Psalm 17 can be read at special moments when the heart is full of gratitude to the Lord for all that He has done in life.

And reading the text during trials will help support the spirit and strengthen in hope. You can read the text in Russian at any time:

1 Head of the choir. The servant of the Lord, David, who spoke the words of this song to the Lord, when the Lord delivered him from the hands of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said:

2 I will love you, O Lord, my strength!

3 The Lord is my rock and my refuge; my Redeemer, my God is my rock; in him I trust; my shield, the horn of my salvation, and my refuge.

4 I will call on the revered Lord, and I will be saved from my enemies.

5 Pangs of death seized me, and floods of iniquity made me afraid;

6 The chains of hell have encircled me, and the nets of death have encircled me.

7 In my distress I called on the Lord, and called on my God. And He heard my voice from His [holy] chamber, and my cry came to His ears.

8 The earth shook and shook, the foundations of the mountains trembled and moved, for [God] was angry;

9 Smoke went up from his anger, and out of his mouth a consuming fire; hot coals fell from Him.

10 He bowed the heavens and descended, and darkness was under his feet.

11 And he sat on the Cherubim and flew, and flew on the wings of the wind.

12 And he made the darkness his cover, the darkness of the waters, the clouds of the air, around him.

13 His clouds, hail and coals of fire, fled from the brilliance before him.

14 The Lord thundered in the heavens, and the Most High gave His voice, hail and coals of fire.

15 He shot his arrows and scattered them, a lot of lightning, and scattered them.

16 And the fountains of waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were opened by your terrible voice, O Lord, by the breath of the spirit of your wrath.

17 He stretched out his hand from on high and took me, and drew me out of many waters;

18 delivered me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, who were stronger than me.

19 They rose up against me in the day of my distress, but the Lord was my strength.

20 He brought me out into a spacious place and delivered me, for He is pleased with me.

21 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanliness of my hands he rewarded me,

22 for I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not been ungodly before my God;

23 For all his commandments are before me, and I have not departed from his statutes.

24 I was blameless before Him, and took care not to sin against me;

25 And the Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanliness of my hands in His sight.

26 You deal mercifully with a merciful man, sincerely with a sincere man,

27 Clean with the clean, but with the wicked one according to his wickedness,

28 For you save the oppressed people, but you humble the haughty eyes.

29 You kindle my lamp, O Lord; My God enlightens my darkness.

30 With you I strike down an army; with my God I climb the wall.

31 God! - His way is blameless, the word of the Lord is pure; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.

32 For who is God but the Lord, and who is a defense but our God?

33 God girds me with strength and arranges for me the right way;

34 makes my feet like deer's, and sets me up on my heights;

35 my hands train me to fight, and my arm breaks the bronze bow.

36 You gave me the shield of Your salvation, and Your right hand supports me, and Your mercy magnifies me.

37 You widen my step under me, and my feet do not stagger.

38 I pursue my enemies and overtake them, and do not return until I destroy them;

39 I strike them, and they cannot get up; they fall under my feet,

40 For you have girded me with strength for war, and have cast down under my feet those who rise up against me;

41 You have turned the rear of my enemies towards me, and I will destroy those who hate me:

42 they cry out, but there is no one who saves; to the Lord, but He does not heed them;

43 I scatter them like dust before the wind; I trample them like dirt in the street.

44 You delivered me from the rebellion of the people, you made me the head of the foreigners; a people whom I did not know serve me;

45 According to one rumor about me, they obey me; foreigners caress before me;

46 foreigners turn pale and tremble in their fortifications.

47 As the Lord lives, and blessed is my protector! Exalted be the God of my salvation,

48 The God who avenges me and subdues the nations under me,

49 and delivering me from my enemies! You exalted me above those who rebel against me and delivered me from a cruel man.

50 Therefore I will praise you, O Lord, among the foreigners, and I will sing to your name,

51 majestically saving the king and showing mercy to your anointed David and his offspring forever.

God hears this prayer too. But the prayer will be stronger, sincere, purer, if the relative or close to the deceased person himself asks God to have mercy on the deceased.

On the days of special commemoration of the dead: on the third, ninth and fortieth days, as well as on parental days, the 17th kathisma (118th psalm) is read. In the liturgical books she is called "Immaculate", according to the word found in her first verse: Blessed are the blameless in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. At home, it is read in the same way as any other, but with some peculiarities. To help the mourners, we place the full rite of repose of the 17th kathisma.

Same troparia, tone 2:

Glory:

And now:

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and my sin before me is taken out. I have sinned against you alone and done evil before you, as if you were justified in your words, and conquered when you judge Thee. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins give birth to me, my mother. Behold, thou hast loved the truth; the unknown and secret wisdom of Thy revealed to me. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Give joy and joy to my hearing; the bones of the humble will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities. Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward me the joy of Your salvation and confirm me with the dominating Spirit. I will teach the wicked in Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from blood, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue rejoices in thy righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. As if you would have desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. Sacrifice to God the spirit is broken; a contrite and humble heart God will not despise. Please, O Lord, with Thy favor Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, an offering and a burnt offering; then they will offer bullocks on your altar.

Troparion is immaculate

Find holy faces, the source of life, and the door of paradise: let me find the way with repentance; lost sheep I am, call me, Savior, and save me.

Chorus:

Having preached the Lamb of God, and slaughter the former, like lambs, and to an ageless life, holy, and eternally reposed; Togo diligently, martyrs, pray, grant us permission to debts.

Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justification.

In the path of a narrow walker, mournful, all in life, the cross, like a yoke, lifted, and following me by faith, come, enjoy, they have prepared for you honor, and crowns of heaven.

Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justification.

I am the inexpressible image of Your glory, even if I bear the plagues of sins: have mercy on Your creation, Lord, and cleanse with Your goodness, and give me a longed-for Fatherland, creating a paradise for a resident of me.

Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justification.

Of ancient times, from those who do not exist, you created me, and in the image of Your Divine honors, by the crime of the commandment, you returned me to the earth, from which they were not taken, on a hedgehog in the likeness, build up, with ancient kindness.

Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justification.

Give rest, O God, to Thy servant and make him in paradise, where the faces of the saints, O Lord, and the righteous women shine like lights: rest Thy servant who has fallen asleep, despising all his sins.

Glory:

The Triradiant One Divinity we piously sing out loud: Holy Thou, Father without beginning, without beginning to the Son and Divine Soul, enlighten us, who serve Thee by faith, and bring forth the eternal fire.

And now:

Rejoice, Pure One, who gave birth to God in the flesh for the salvation of all, You have found salvation for the human race, May we find paradise with You, Pure, Blessed Mother of God!

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God (thrice).

Psalm 118 in Russian translation by P. Jungerov

118. Alleluia.

Blessed are the blameless in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who study His revelations; they will seek Him with all their heart. Those who do no iniquity walk in His ways. You commanded to keep Your commandments firmly. Oh, that my ways were directed to the preservation of Thy justifications! Then I would not be ashamed, considering all Your commandments. I confess to Thee in righteousness of heart, learning the judgments of Thy righteousness. I will keep your justifications, do not leave me completely. How (guided) will the young man correct his path? Keeping your words. With all my heart I have sought Thee; do not remove me from Thy commandments. I have hidden Your words in my heart so that I would not sin against You. Blessed are You, Lord, teach me Your justifications! With my mouth I proclaimed all the sayings of your mouth. On the path of Your revelations, I enjoyed, as if (owning) all the riches. I will meditate on Thy commandments, and meditate on Thy ways. I will learn from Thy justifications; I will not forget Thy words. Reward Your servant, revive me, and I will keep Your words. Open my eyes, and I will understand miracles from Your law. I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commandments from me. With love at all times, my soul desires Your judgments. You stopped the proud, cursed are those who deviate from Your commandments. Remove from me reproach and humiliation, for I have sought Your revelations. For behold, the princes sat down and slandered me, but your servant meditated on your justifications. Your testimonies are a lesson for me, and my counselors are Your vindications. My soul has stuck to the ground; revive me according to Your word. I have declared my ways, and You have heard me: teach me Your justifications. Let me understand the way of Your justifications, and I will meditate on Your wonders. My soul slumbered from despondency, strengthen me with Thy words. Remove the path of unrighteousness from me, and according to Your law have mercy on me. I have chosen the path of truth, and I have not forgotten your judgments. I have clung to Your testimonies, Lord, do not shame me. I walked in the way of Your commandments when You enlarged my heart. Make for me a law, O Lord, the way of Your justifications, and I will always seek it. Give me understanding, and I will search Your law and keep it with all my heart. Guide me in the path of Your commandments, for I have desired it. Incline my heart to Your revelations, and not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes, so as not to see the vanity; in Your way, revive me. Set Your word for Your servant in fear of You. Remove from me my reproach, which I (constantly) saw, for Your judgments are good. Behold, I have desired Thy commandments: in Thy righteousness revive me. And may Thy mercy come upon me, O Lord, according to Thy word, Thy salvation. And I will give an answer to those who reproach me, for I trusted in Your words. Do not completely take away the word of truth from my mouth, for I have trusted in Your judgments. And I will keep Your law forever and ever and ever. And I walked freely, for I sought Your commandments. And he spoke of your testimonies before kings and was not ashamed. And I learned in Your commandments, which I greatly loved. And I stretched out my hands to Thy commandments, which I loved, and meditated on Thy justifications. Remember the words of Thy servant to Thy servant, in which Thou hast told me to trust. This comforted me in my humiliation, for your word revived me. The proud have transgressed the law to the extreme, but I have not deviated from Your law. I remembered Your judgments from the ages, O Lord, and I was comforted. Sorrow seized me at the sight of sinners who forsake Your law. Your justifications were songs to me in the place of my wandering. I remembered (and) at night your name, O Lord, and I kept your law. This happened to me, for I sought Your justifications. Part of me is You, Lord; (wherefore) I said: (must) keep thy law. I prayed before You with all my heart: have mercy on me according to Your word! I have contemplated Thy ways, and turned my steps to Thy testimonies. I prepared myself without embarrassment to keep Your commandments. The nets of sinners have entangled me, but I have not forgotten Your law. At midnight I got up to praise You for Your righteous judgments. I am a companion with all who fear You and keep Your commandments. The earth is full of Thy mercy, O Lord; teach me Thy justifications. You have done good to Your servant, O Lord, according to Your word. Teach me goodness, punishment and understanding, for I have believed in Your commandments. Before my humiliation, I sinned, therefore I keep Your word. You are good, O Lord, and according to your goodness teach me your justifications. The iniquity of the proud has multiplied against me, but with all my heart I will heed Thy commandments. Their hearts hardened like curdled milk, but I learned your law. It is good for me that You have humbled me so that I may learn Your justifications. The law of your mouth is better for me than thousands of gold and silver.

Glory:

Your hands created me and created me: give me understanding, and I will learn your commandments. Those who fear You will see me and rejoice, for I have trusted in Your words. I understood, O Lord, that Your judgments are righteousness, and (that) You justly humbled me. May Thy mercy be a consolation to me, according to the word of Thy servant Thy! May Thy bounties come upon me, and I will live, for Thy law is a lesson for me. Let the proud be ashamed because they have unjustly committed iniquity against me, but I will meditate on Your commandments. May those who fear You and know Your testimonies convert me. Let my heart be blameless in Your justifications, let me not be put to shame! My soul melts (expecting) Your salvation; I have trusted in your words. My eyes are melting (expecting) your salvation: when will you comfort me? For I have become like fur in the cold; (but) I have not forgotten your justifications. How many days are left for your servant? When will you bring me judgment (having delivered) from my persecutors? The transgressors have told me (their) reasoning, but this is not Your law, Lord. All Your commandments are true, they unjustly persecuted me, help me. They almost destroyed me on earth, but I did not leave Your commandments. By Thy mercy revive me, and I will keep the revelations of Thy mouth. Your word, O Lord, abides forever in heaven; generation and generation is your truth. You founded the earth and it abides. In Thy ordinance the day is, for all things serve Thee. If Your law had not been a comfort to me, I would have perished in my humiliation. I will never forget your justifications, for by them you revived me.

[Wednesday:]

I am Yours, save me, for I have sought Your justifications. Sinners have been waiting for me to destroy me, (a) I have understood Your testimonies. I have seen the limit of all perfection, (but) your commandment is exceedingly broad. How I have loved Your law, O Lord! Every day he is a lesson for me. By Thy commandment Thou hast made me wiser than my enemies, for she is mine for ever. I have become more wise than all my teachers, for your revelations are a lesson for me. I have become more knowledgeable than the elders, for I have sought Your commandments! I kept my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy words. I have not shied away from Your judgments, for You have given me the law. How sweet are thy words to my throat! Sweeter than honey for my lips. From your commandments I have received understanding; therefore I have hated every way of unrighteousness. A lamp to my feet is Your law and a light to my paths. I swore and determined to keep the judgments of Your righteousness. I am humiliated to the extreme, Lord, revive me, according to Your word. Delight in the voluntary (vows) of my mouth, O Lord, and teach me your judgments. My soul is always in Your hands, and I have not forgotten Your law. Sinners set a net for me, but I did not deviate from Your commandments. I have received your testimonies as an inheritance for ever, for they are the joy of my heart. I incline my heart to fulfill Your justifications for ever, for the sake of recompense. I have hated transgressors, but I have loved Your law. You are my helper and intercessor, I trusted in Your words. Depart from me, you evil ones, and I will learn the commandments of my God. Intercede for me according to Your word, and I will live, and do not disgrace me in my aspirations. Help me, and I will be saved, and I will learn from Your justifications. Thou hast despised all who depart from Thy statutes, for their thought is unrighteous. I recognized as criminals all the sinners of the earth, therefore I loved Your revelations. Nail my flesh to Thy fear, for I feared Thy judgments. I have done judgment and righteousness, do not betray me to those who offend me. Protect Your servant for the good (him), so that the proud do not slander me. My eyes have failed (waiting) for Your salvation and the word of Your righteousness. Do with Thy servant according to Thy mercy and teach me Thy justifications. I am Your servant: teach me, and I will know Your testimonies. It is time for the Lord to act: they have destroyed your law. But I have loved Your commandments more than gold and topaz. Therefore, I have turned to all Your commandments; I have hated every way of unrighteousness. Wonderful are Thy revelations, therefore my soul has deepened into them. The manifestation of Your words enlightens and instructs infants. I opened my mouth and drew the Spirit into me, for I have desired Thy commandments.

Glory:

Look down on me and have mercy on me, as you do with those who love your name. Guide my steps according to your word, and let no iniquity possess me. Deliver me from human slander, and I will keep Your commandments. Enlighten Your face on Your servant and teach me Your justifications. Fountains of water have worn out my eyes, for I have not kept thy law. Righteous are You, O Lord, and righteous are Your judgments. In Your testimonies You commanded righteousness and perfect truth. I was consumed by jealousy for You, for my enemies have forgotten Your words. Your word is very fiery, and Your servant loved it. I am young and lowly, (but) I have not forgotten Your justifications. Your righteousness is righteousness forever, and your law is truth. Sorrows and needs have overtaken me, Your commandments are my consolation. Thy testimonies are truth forever: give me understanding, and I will live. I called out with all my heart: Hear me, Lord! I will seek your justifications. I called to You: save me! And I will keep your testimonies. I anticipated in timelessness and called, (for) I trusted in Your words. My eyes have looked ahead to the morning, to learn from your words. Hear my voice, Lord, according to Your mercy, according to Your judgment, revive me. Those who persecute me without law have drawn near, but they have departed from your law. You are near, O Lord, and all Your ways are truth. From the beginning I have learned from Your testimonies that You have established them for ever. Look at my humiliation and deliver me, for I have not forgotten your law. Judge my case and deliver me; for the sake of your word, revive me. Salvation is far from sinners, for they have not sought Your justifications. Great are Your bounties, O Lord, revive me according to Your judgment. I have many persecutors and oppressors, but I have not shied away from Your revelations. I saw the foolish and lamented that they did not keep your words. See how I have loved Your commandments. God! Revive me by your grace. The beginning of Your words is truth, and forever all the judgments of Your righteousness. Princes persecuted me without guilt, and my heart was afraid of your words. I will rejoice in your words, as one who finds a great booty. I hated unrighteousness and abhorred it, but I loved your law. Seven times a day I praised You for Your righteous judgments. The world is great for those who love Your law, and there is no temptation for them. I looked forward to Your salvation, O Lord, and I loved Your commandments. My soul has kept Your testimonies and greatly loved them. I have kept Thy commandments and Thy testimonies, for all my ways are before Thee, O Lord. May my prayer draw near to Thee, O Lord, according to Thy word, give me understanding. Let my petition come in to Thee, O Lord, according to Thy word, deliver me. My mouth will pour out a song when You teach me Your justifications. My tongue shall proclaim Thy words, for all Thy commandments are true. May Thy hand be for my salvation, for I have loved Thy commandments. I have desired Thy salvation, O Lord, and Thy law is my instruction. My soul will live and praise You, and Your judgments will help me. I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant, for I have not forgotten thy commandments.

Same troparia, tone 2:

I have sinned against You, Savior, like a prodigal son: accept me, Father, who repents, and have mercy on me, O God.

Glory: I call to Thee, Christ the Savior, with the publican's voice: cleanse me as it is, and have mercy on me, O God.

And now: Mother of God, do not despise me demanding Thy intercession: my soul has hoped in Thee, and have mercy on me.

Lord, have mercy (40) and prayer:

Lord God Almighty and Creator of all, generous Father, and God of mercy, Who created man from the earth, and Showed him in Your image and likeness, and by this Your magnificent Name will be glorified on earth, and torn out because of the transgression of Your commandments, recreating for the best him in Thy Christ, and elevate him to Heaven: I thank Thee, for Thou hast multiplied Thy greatness upon me, and Thou didst not betray me to my enemy to the end; Now, O Lord, many-merciful and loving, do not want the death of a sinner, but wait for the conversion, and accept: Even the overthrown, heal the contrite, turn me to repentance, and correct the overthrown, and heal the contrite: remember Your bounty, and even from Your age Forget my incomprehensible goodness and my immeasurable iniquity, even if I have done it in deed and word and thought: allow the blindness of my heart, and give me tears of tenderness to cleanse the filth of my thoughts. Hear, O Lord, listen, Lover of mankind, cleanse, Merciful, and from the torment of the reigning passions in me, free my cursed soul of freedom. And let sin not hold me to anyone, let the demon fight against me below, let him lead me below to his desire, but with Your sovereign hand, his dominion, stealing me, You reign in me, Good and Humane Lord, and all Your being, and let me live the rest according to Your good will. And give me the ineffable goodness of the heart, cleansing, keeping the mouth, the rightness of deeds, humble wisdom, peace of thoughts, the silence of my spiritual strength, spiritual joy, true love, long-suffering, goodness, meekness, unfeigned faith, restraint, restraint, and fulfill all of me good fruits, the gift of your Holy Spirit. And do not elevate me to the half-time, my days, below my uncorrected and unprepared, delight my soul, but complete me with Your perfection, and bring me out of this life, as if I had gone through the beginning and power of darkness unhindered, I will see Your grace and I am unapproachable Your glory, the kindness inexpressible , with all Your saints, be sanctified in them, and glorify Your all-honorable and magnificent name, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever, amen.
