After doing a test drive, I realized that we should take. The new generation is definitely better than the previous one, if the comfort and smoothness of the ride were at a height in the previous body, then no one liked the interior in the 40s. The handbrake mechanism is a bit weak, but it is rarely used on cars with automatic transmission. To replace its cables, you need to remove a lot of parts of the plastic lining of the passenger compartment, so on older cars it either does not work at all (because the cables are soured), or simply does not create the necessary braking force. The steering is also reliable and simply arranged. Rack tapping is heard only at high mileage, leaks are rare. More often, the spline connection of the steering column or the cardan cross is knocking. Steering wheel position sensor malfunctions affect the operation of the ESP more, but on cars with a hybrid power plant that are rarely found in our country, this can cause steering failure.

Transmission

The mechanics are solid, as expected. It is worth paying attention only to the leaks of the manual transmission and the condition of the outer covers of the CV joint. The manual shift transmission itself will not bring any surprises - the E 351 box was installed on several generations of Toyota cars, and it showed itself in at its best. No fashionable dual-mass flywheels, except perhaps hydraulic release, but the bearing is separate, and the hydraulics are separate. Absolutely classic and reliable design.

However, some age wear occurs. The gearshift lever is gradually loosening, the rocker is gaining backlash over time. And especially strong personalities sometimes stretch and tear the drive cables from the latches or even bend the lever itself. The latter, by the way, is sometimes performed on purpose: initially it goes too far forward and to the right, and on a wide center console this is not the best solution. Most of the cars are equipped with automatic transmissions. Of course, they are all manufactured by the Aisin subsidiary. Regularly, the Russian Camry relied on a five-speed "automatic" Aisin U 250E with a 2.4 engine and a six-speed U 660E for cars with a 3.5 engine.

In addition to these options, there may be imported cars with other units. So, restyled cars can be found with a 2.5 engine and a “six-speed” U 760E, and all-wheel drive cars with right-hand drive that are rare in our country were equipped with a four-speed gearbox U 241E. The e-CVT P311 was installed on the hybrid ones.

The most common is the five-speed U 250E / U 151E, also known as Aisin 95-51LS. It is the U 151E version that is most often installed on Russian-assembled cars, it is a little stronger. In principle, the box can also withstand the torque of 3.3 / 3.5 engines - for example, it was it that was installed on the Lexus RX 330. But with powerful engines, it did not live long and not very happily, but with 2.4 it turned out to be almost eternal.

However, don't count on automatic luck. There are enough people who confuse the Camry with the Ferrari 360, and even this “automatic” will be left for them. Racing and lack of maintenance primarily finish off the solenoids of the valve body, and if the oil is not changed in time, irreparable damage to the “plate” itself, its distortions and overheating occur. The mechanics of the automatic transmission also suffers: the bushing and pump seals wear out, the box starts to leak. Often, overly aggressive drivers have a damaged back cover and burn out Overdrive and Direct clutch packs. And in advanced cases, the entire set of these packages, including the drum. But first, the cover bearing will die, which is usually accompanied by a blow when turning on the reverse gear and switching from second to third.

In repair, the box is well mastered - “thank you” to crossovers with powerful V 6 and minibuses. Thanks to this, there should not be any special problems with the restoration. But in this case, it’s easier to find a contract unit: Camry boxes often serve as “donors” for crossover all-wheel drive transmissions, since there are a lot of them and they are cheap. But in no case should you look for a replacement version from the 3.3 engine - the transmission mechanics do not differ, but the difference in wear will be big.

The six-speed U 660E is somewhat more complex in design and has a number of childhood illnesses. Its version for weaker engines U 760E came out later, and therefore turned out to be somewhat more reliable. Like many modern automatic transmissions, there is a problem with early lining wear. With runs over 120-150 thousand, it is already worthwhile to carefully monitor the purity of the oil, because with critical wear, the gas turbine engine can very quickly “clog” the channels of the valve body and leave the box without oil.

Plate wear, solenoids wear and other things are typical problems. Often, a replacement of the selector position board with a temperature sensor is added to them. During normal operation, the resource is more than sufficient, for 200 thousand, but it is very sharply reduced if you drive aggressively. But Camry with a 3.5 engine for many turned out to be just a machine for “bending” everyone and everything ... Remember this.

Another problem is much more serious, which does not appear on every machine, but leads to a complete failure of the unit. The main housing bearing begins to play due to the loosening of the thrust washer. Especially often this happens to those who load a cold automatic transmission. Vibrations at the same time kill all other nodes, including the planetary gear, clutch hub, differential, and if you start the situation, then the box body.

Damage to the Direct drum is usually associated with poor sealing of its package - pistons and clutches need to be replaced, sometimes the drum itself is overheated. In case of wear of the drum or repeated incorrect installation of the pistons, the drum with the shaft assembly is often changed, but in this case only the price of spare parts exceeds 50 thousand rubles.

Cars after restyling are mainly equipped with an already modified version of the 6-speed automatic transmission, but nevertheless, by the end of the model’s release, the problems have not been completely resolved and can manifest themselves. Especially during hard use.

Well, the “standard” problem with the wear of the rear cover came to the fore, like in five-speed boxes. In this case, packets C1-C2 are lit, which are responsible for transmissions 1-4. The U 760 box has no bearing problem and is basically the same as the restyled U 660 versions.


The "all-wheel drive" transmission U 241E belongs to the family of "eternal" boxes U 140 / U 240 (aka Aisin AW90-40LS), which have long become legendary. The main weaknesses are the same as other Toyota boxes - the back cover, electronics failures and solenoids wear. Moreover, the wear of the linings of the blocking of the gas turbine engine during aggressive movement occurs quickly - the lining is too small.

Motors

As with everything else, the Camry's engines are also in order. They are reliable, conveniently arranged and inexpensive to repair. With proper operation, they will also survive the body.
