Why is it disgusting to hear your voice on the record. Why do people not like the sound of their own voice? Why does my voice sound different on recording?

Most of us are sure that the voice when recorded sounds worse than it really is. Everything is connected with the structural features of our ear and human psychology. Today we will talk about why we all do not like our own voice in the recording, and how our voice can affect our emotional state.

Sound is defined by anatomy

When we hear "external" sounds, including the voices of other people, they reach us through the air and enter the outer ear, causing the eardrum to vibrate. The ossicles in the middle ear then transmit these vibrations to the cochlea in the inner ear and are sent to the brain via electrical impulses. The situation is different when we hear our voice: it reaches not only through the air, but also through the bones of the skull. Bones emit vibrations that are perceived in the same way as sound. This affects the frequency of the signal and the pitch we hear. That is why our voice is perceived differently when we hear it on a recording. But why can this sound cause us irritation?

Unfamiliar and alien voice

The simplest assumption is that we simply cannot recognize ourselves on the recording, and yet the voice is one of the important parts of self-identification. And it becomes difficult for us to come to terms with the fact that others hear this "unfamiliar" voice. This was stated in a 1966 study.

But the very next year, the judgment was called into question, because the subjects almost always recognized themselves in the recording the first time. However, this was influenced by the fact that the subjects were warned that they would hear themselves. Probably, if this is not warned, the results may be different.

Surprisingly, when such an "anonymous" experiment was conducted, the participants called the recording of their voice more pleasant and attractive, despite the fact that they did not know who it belonged to. According to experts, an important factor is that a person feels a loss of control: we are used to instantly changing the timbre and pitch of the voice depending on the situation. But in the case of recording, this is not possible.

How to become happier?

An experiment was also conducted by an international group of scientists. The subjects read the stories aloud and heard their voice modified in real time through headphones. The computer program processed the sound and added components of emotional intonations depending on the plot of the story.

As a result, those participants who caught sad or disturbing notes felt depressed. A joyful voice could cheer you up. Scientists were able to draw their own conclusion from this: not only emotions affect our voice, but our voice can also affect our mood. The researchers are confident that in the future, these results can be applied in the treatment of mental disorders.

Often, almost always, novice vocalists ask themselves the question: " Why is the voice different on the recording?"That is, when we say something, we hear our voice differently than on the recording (on the recorder, on the video, etc.)? Moreover, often it is not just different, but we also do not like it on the recording Let's figure out why this is happening today.

Without going into details, we can say that we can hear our own voice internally, and by air. So, when talking, we hear our voice both internally and through the air (with our ears). Ears understandable, but what does "internally" mean?

In the word "internal" I mean that the voice for us inside is formed through various, passes through various channels, paths that are inside of us. And since they are inside us, then only we hear our voice during a conversation (that is, when we ourselves talk) just like that, and everyone else hears our voice, like ... like on a recording. Read on.

But how do we hear our voice on? In this case, we only hear by air i.e. ears. Therefore, for us it seems alien, because we are used to our conversational voice, which we hear not only through the air, but also internally.

It turns out that on the record there is your real voice that everyone around hears, and more often we don’t like it.

Note. But sometimes it may be that even on the recording your voice may not be real (that is, not the same as other people hear). This may be due, for example, to a poor-quality microphone used to record your voice, or due to incorrect voice processing. And in general, the recording itself can distort your voice a little. It will look like it would, but still not real.

Some will think that mysticism comes next, but try to understand. The fact is that during a conversation, your brain itself tries to adjust the voice so that you like it. That is, the brain tries to make you perceive your voice as best as possible, so that it seems more beautiful to you.

But this does not happen on the recording, so here the voice is alien to you. And who is pleased to realize that your voice is this alien voice that is on the record?

What to do in the end?

What to do? And here's the thing - you just need to accept your voice as it really is (as it sounds on the recording - this is your real voice, but we do not take cases when the recording quality is poor).

Believe me, ALL people are not used to their voice on the record, and almost everyone does not like it, because they are not used to it. You just need to get used to and love your voice. If he is a stranger to you, this does not mean that he is ugly. For others, your voice is beautiful.

Conclusion

So you and I found out why the voice is different on the recording, why during a conversation we hear one voice, and on the recording our voice changes.

If you've just discovered that your voice on tape isn't what you're used to hearing every day, don't be surprised. You are not unique and your case is not exceptional, because almost everyone does not like their voice in the recording.

This phenomenon is known and well studied. Its essence is that you hear yourself differently than other people. The feeling of dislike that arises is subjective: you are annoyed by your own voice in the recording because of the difference between expectation and reality, and not because it is actually bad. But be that as it may, it is in your power to change the voice: expand the range, make it more voluminous and enhance the sound.

Why does my voice sound different on recording?

Modern sound recording equipment registers sound quite accurately. This means that your voice in the recording is the same voice that people around you hear. But the voice familiar to you is heard only by you and no one else. The phenomenon is explained by the fact that the sound emanating from the larynx travels different paths to the ear of the listener and your own ear: through the air and through the tissues of the body. To the listener, sound travels only through the air, to your inner ear through the air, through the bones, soft tissues, and fluids of the head.

It turns out that you have two voices and both of them are real - yours. The difference is who is listening. However, if your professional activity requires good command of the voice, then attention should be paid to the one that others hear. If you don't like your voice on a recording, maybe it's time to work on it.

“Once I asked a speech therapist: what kind of voice is beautiful for you? He replied that the most beautiful is a sincere voice that tells the truth ... "André Dussolier

Your voice is as unique as the pattern of the iris. It is impossible to change it completely to someone else's, and there is no need for it. Write down a few phrases on the recorder and try to formulate what exactly annoys you with the sound of your own voice on the audio recording. If this is weakness, colorlessness, hoarseness, cracking, squeaky, muffledness, and so on, then we are talking about two problems: clamped ligaments and improper sound production.

Getting rid of clamps

The word "clamp" means excess tension that occurs in the body against our will and does not play a role in the performance of the main task. To better understand its nature, conduct an experiment: tighten your neck as much as possible and see which parts of the body automatically tightened along with it. Most people will find that the arms, shoulders, chest and abdomen muscles, that is, almost the entire torso, were in good shape, and the task was to strain only the neck. The same side tension can occur in the vocal cords when you are not expecting it.

Exercise

  • Take a comfortable position, lying on your back, without crossing your arms and legs.
  • Take a deep breath and relax completely as you exhale.
  • Begin to slowly relax your body from the toes of your left foot. Mentally check how relaxed they are and rise higher to the calf, thigh, etc.
  • Mentally move your entire body from the tips of your toes to the top of your head, relaxing and carefully checking every inch.

Learning to sound right

If you are not comfortable with a weak or "flat" sounding voice, the problem may be in the wrong production of sound, which depends on the position of the larynx and breathing. Feel your throat with your hand during and immediately after a deep yawn. Have you noticed how low your larynx drops when you yawn? This is its correct position, not blocking the throat, allowing you to put the sound on the breath, increasing its strength and volume. On the contrary, when the larynx is raised, the sound is no longer supported by the breath, and you are forced to tense your ligaments to sound louder. As a result, there is a high probability of injuring the ligaments and a flat, non-voluminous sound, a sharp sound instead of a loud one.

Exercise

  • Try to fix the lower jaw, tongue and throat in a position as close as possible to a yawn. Do not strain your throat, just understand how it is done and fix it.
  • Breathe calmly and deeply in this position.
  • When you inhale, draw air not with your chest, but with your stomach, and push it out in the same way when you exhale.
  • Breathing will cause yawning - this is normal. Yawn with pleasure, open your throat as wide as possible.
  • When you feel that you have taken your breath, start adding open vowels to it (and, uh, oh, u, ah, s - alternately). Watch the vibration of the sound, ideally it should rise from the abdominal cavity along with the breath.

How the script is written and the roles in the film are distributed, how to get rid of the clamps and fear of the camera will tell the acting teacher and the TV school. You will be able to reveal yourself in front of the camera in a few lessons, you will learn what editing and post-production of cinema is.

Foreword:

Actually, why I chose this particular show for analysis. Maybe because in the last 5 years it's the only thing I've watched on TV. I watched it because at one time I myself was a little connected with music, and this format of the show seemed interesting to me because it gives a chance for novice musicians and vocalists to at least express themselves throughout the country. I will say right away that I did not finish watching the last 6th season even halfway - I was disappointed and lost interest.

Main part

So, let's start debriefing. The main questions that I want to answer are what should a show of this format teach and what does the Voice show actually teach? Regarding the first question, I think that the Voice show should:

1. To instill in the viewer a taste for good quality music.
2. Give a chance to talented performers to show themselves.
3. Create and show the correct image of the performer.
4. Show the viewer the cultural wealth of our country and our native language, thereby strengthening patriotic sentiments among the population.
5. All participants of the show (presenter, mentors, contestants) must support such human qualities as kindness, honesty, justice, cooperation, support by their actions.

Let's dwell on each point in more detail and consider how the show "Voice" meets the specified criteria.

Taste for good quality music

Let's define what "good quality" music means. For one this song is good, for another it is not. After all, as they say, all felt-tip pens are different in taste and color. And where does a person get a certain taste? Isn't the media shaping it? Or does the media only reflect the real taste preferences of the audience? I think that taste is instilled from childhood. But who? And who was the first to succeed - parents, friends, the media. Then, in an adult conscious life, an individual, of course, can change his taste by a volitional decision, but this is already more difficult to do.

I think that “good quality” music/song should first of all have a certain semantic load, namely:

1. It promotes creative impulses and moods in a person;
2. It brings to the masses and sings of such concepts as kindness, honesty, justice, cooperation, support, love.
3. It should contribute to the solution of the moral problems of society:
- a clear boundary between good and evil;
- good always triumphs over evil.

Secondly, the musicality and harmony of a musical work are also important due to the fact that it has a direct physical (through sound waves) effect on the human body. This topic is very extensive, so we will not delve into it within the framework of this analysis.

The show "Voice" can and does influence the musical tastes and preferences of its audience through the opinions of authorities - 4 mentors of the contestants. It is through their opinion that the audience develops a taste for certain music. As a rule, probably in 90% of cases, mentors praise a song in a foreign (especially English) language, performed in a modern manner and in a popular genre (rock, pop).

Such directions as romances, ballads, Russian folk songs, military songs are not in demand among mentors. Although there are exceptions. For example, at the stage of auditions, the mentor chooses a contestant who sang, say, a Russian folk song. But then the mentor first of all asks the contestant if he can sing in English and in other genres. And, of course, further within the show, the mentor tries to reformat the contestant to fit his format, and if it doesn’t work out, he kicks him out. Often this is exactly what happens.

Much attention is paid by mentors to the technique of performing a work, artistry, emotionality, and musicality. This in itself is not bad. But at the same time, as a rule, the first criterion of "good quality" music is completely ignored - the semantic load.

Give talented performers a chance to show themselves

To begin with, let's try to define the term "talented performer". In my opinion, a talented performer:

1. From a technical point of view, must have sufficient vocal abilities to perform the selected piece of music without distorting the original.
2. Must be able to emotionally color his performance in such a way as to most effectively convey the semantic load of the work to the listener. The performance should inspire, inspire, fill the listener with bright feelings.
3. Must have an appearance and behave on stage in accordance with the piece of music being performed, which, in turn, should inspire, inspire, fill the listener with bright feelings.

I think that this is a necessary minimum for a talented performer.

It all starts with the consideration of the application for participation in the show - this is the first filter of talents. The expert commission of the First Channel selects participants, guided by its own specific criteria. Then the filtered mass of talents falls into the hands of mentors, who, guided by their own (?) criteria, recruit participants to their teams - this is the second filter. Then, at each stage, the mentor decides which of the contestants will move on and who will leave the show.

What criteria do mentors use?

As a rule, the main explicit criteria are technical performance, emotionality, artistry. Mentors interpret these criteria, each in their own way, in the direction they need (read - Channel One). So, if the contestant did not perform well from a technical point of view, but he should be left in the project, then the mentor will assure the viewer that the technical performance is not the main thing, but the emotionality and energy of the contestant are most important. Basically a play on words, nothing more.

At the semi-final stage, the results of the vote of the viewers are added to the mentor's decision, and in the final, only the viewers choose the winner. Thus, it seems like not only mentors, but also viewers themselves choose worthy contestants. It would seem, well, here comes justice! But, firstly, viewers are connected to the choice only at the last two stages, at which the mass of talents is already very filtered out, and you have to choose from what is left. And secondly, for some reason I have vague doubts about the reality of spectator voting. Are the results rigged?

Create and show the correct image of the performer

In my opinion, the “correct” image of a performer should bring to the masses and personify such concepts as kindness, honesty, justice, modesty and much more positive. Moreover, men should personify masculine qualities - strength, will, masculinity, stamina, courage. And women, in turn, are feminine qualities - kindness, gentleness, femininity, modesty.

And what do we have in the show "Voice"? With rare exceptions, everything is turned upside down. If a male contestant shows his sensuality, gentleness, sings a song in a foreign language with a “squeaky” voice, then he will deserve a storm of applause and praise from the mentor. If a female contestant looks and behaves provocatively, and sometimes even vulgarly, then she will certainly receive the approval of the audience and flattering reviews from mentors.

Show the viewer the cultural wealth of our country and our native language

Due to the fact that the show "Voice" is broadcast in our country on the federal channel, and our compatriots participate in it, I think it is logical to assume that this show should show the cultural wealth of our country and our native language.

What do we really have?

Most of the songs are of foreign origin and are performed by the contestants in English. As a rule, these are hits of foreign charts. I am not against the world cultural heritage and the fact that worthy foreign songs sounded within the framework of this show. But, firstly, most of the foreign songs in the Voice show cannot be classified as worthy. And secondly, the quantitative ratio should be in favor of domestic compositions, which is not observed in the show.

And as for last 5th paragraph about the human qualities that all participants and creators of the show "Voice" should support, I will write briefly - in the process of creating this show, such a goal was clearly not pursued ...
