PC won't go into bios. How to enter BIOS (bios): key combinations. Hard case - "hard" problems

Greetings to all readers of the computer blog site! The other day I got a Samsung NP300E5C-S0VRU laptop with the BOOTMGR is Missing problem. The problem is basically standard. The solution is to restore the bootloader via Live-CD, or reinstall Windows. Since, according to the client, the hard drive was formatted, they agreed to reinstall.

No problem - everything is as usual, we go into the BIOS, set the boot from the USB flash drive, install Windows. Let's go... Oops... Not so fast, bro!

Samsung NP300E5C laptop does not enter BIOS when pressing f2

The laptop interrupted the process of its revival at the first point. When you press F2, he wrote “Entering SETUP” for a split second, but still continued to boot from the hard drive, and stubbornly gave out the inscription BootMgr is Missing.

Physical turning off the hard drive it didn’t work - the laptop simply went into a cyclic reboot, preventing it from entering the BIOS via F2 or starting Recovery Mode via F4.

Picking on the Internet showed that the problem is quite common, it is for this model. The fact is that in this laptop, the keyboard lock is enabled by default when entering the BIOS. When reinstalling Windows from 8 to 7, you had to first enter UEFI through Win8, disable Secure Boot, and enable CSV. And then already perform some actions to reinstall Windows.

The owner of the laptop somehow formatted the hard drive without changing the BIOS settings before, and, accordingly, got a “vicious circle” - to enter the BIOS, you had to install the OS, and to install the OS, you had to go to bios.

BIOS won't start on laptop

Various solutions to this problem are offered on the Internet, but I will offer my own, personally verified by me.

List of what you need:

So, you have a hard drive with an OS installed, you inserted it into your laptop. We start it, the OS should boot. We install pre-downloaded drivers for network adapters, connect the laptop to the Internet via Wi-Fi or cable.

We launch the BIOS update program downloaded from off. site. This is how the window of the Bios update utility on Samsung laptops looks like (in the background is the Samsung website, from where everything was downloaded):

As you can see in the picture, the current system BIOS is the same as the latest bios available for download (P09RAP firmware). This is because I took the photo after the update.

These versions most likely do not match for you, so, firstly, we make sure that you have a battery inserted and charged at least 30%, and a network device is connected. Secondly, click the "Update" button.

So, the BIOS update progress has reached the end, the laptop has rebooted. Most likely, now the OS will stop loading, but now this is not a problem for us, because the BIOS is unlocked! We press F2 when loading, change the settings to the ones we need (disable Secure biot and enable Legacy CSV), and calmly install any Windows we want!

Laptop won't enter BIOS - [SOLVED]

It is possible that the problem is when pressing F2 does not start bios, can be found on other laptops besides Samsung. Also, it may occur when replacing a hard drive. The solution is to update the bios to the latest version. And updating the BIOS is not such a complicated procedure, as you could see by reading this article!

The most important thing is that a sudden power outage does not happen, otherwise we will get a “brick”. Which will have to be revived by disassembling the laptop, soldering the BIOS chip with a hot air gun, flashing it through the programmer, and soldering it back. This is an operation that is not available to everyone.

I'm glad I could help you with my note! If you have any questions - write in the comments! Do not forget to subscribe to blog updates so as not to miss interesting articles on repairing and setting up your computer equipment!

Question from user

Hello.

Tell me with one problem: I just can’t enter the BIOS, I have already tried all the buttons (DEL, F2, ESC, F12, etc.) - the computer does not respond to them. The motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-H11 (as it is written in the specification for the PC). What can be done?

Hello.

It is difficult to name an unambiguous reason (by the way, you indicated the model of the motherboard incorrectly). Most often, it is not possible to enter the BIOS due to a "not working" keyboard or an incorrectly selected key. Below is a list of everything you need to pay attention to...

Note: if you need to enter the BIOS to install a new OS, then this can be done in another way (see paragraphs 4, 5 below) ...

What to do if the computer does not enter the BIOS / UEFI

Key and its pressing time

And so, the first thing you should start dealing with this problem is to clarify the key to enter the BIOS. In the vast majority of cases, the key is used for this. DEL(for the board from GIGABYTE including). A little less often are the keys F2, ESC, F10, F12. See the instructions below, there are buttons for different manufacturers.

Also important is one moment: BIOS / UEFI loading can be so fast that you can simply not have time to press the desired key. Therefore, try another option: when the PC / laptop is still turned off, hold down the entry key (ESC, for example), and then turn on the device (do not press the key until entering the BIOS!).

Hold down the key to enter the BIOS (for example, ESC) and turn on the device (laptop)

There is an option to "get" into the BIOS without pressing keys at the boot stage...

If you have a relatively modern computer / laptop with Windows 8/10 installed, then you can enter the BIOS through the OS interface.

First you need to open the section "Restoration" in system settings. Next, restart the computer through special boot options (see screenshot below).

Then open the section and click on "EFI Built-in Options" (see photo below). The computer will then restart and the BIOS window will open automatically...

Keyboard model and port used

Wireless keyboards have become very popular these days. Everything would be fine, but a number of models simply do not work until Windows is loaded (the same can be said about some USB keyboards connected via various adapters ...).

Here's a simple tip: have an emergency PS/2 keyboard (it should definitely work). If you have a USB keyboard, then there are small adapters for it (USB to PS / 2). It is also worth trying to connect the keyboard directly to the USB ports located on the back of the system unit. (if connected to USB 3.0, try USB 2.0 ports).

Reset BIOS settings

In some cases, fixing the problem helps in default. To do this, you can use two methods:

By the way! After such a procedure (even if you still can't get into BIOS) most likely its settings have been reset. And this may, for example, allow you to start installing Windows from a bootable USB flash drive / DVD (because by default, in many BIOS versions, the first boot device is a CD / USB flash drive, and then a hard drive).

Disabling the hard drive

In some cases, due to a failed hard drive, its initialization is delayed (sometimes it even leads to a PC freezing). Of course, this point can also be the cause of the problem in question...

What can be done: try disconnecting all drives from SATA, USB, M2 ports of the PC (flash drives, hard drives, solid state drives, etc.). Ideally, leave the keyboard and monitor alone, then reboot the device and try to enter the BIOS.

By the way! If you need to enter the BIOS to install the OS, then you can try formatting the hard drive on another PC, and then connect it to the current one. Thus, Windows will not be launched from it and the PC will automatically try to boot from the connected installation flash drive (CD). At least that's true for the default BIOS settings...

BIOS update

If all the previous steps were unsuccessful, it may be worth updating the BIOS. Moreover, it is not at all necessary to upgrade the version - you can also install something older (note: the new version does not always work more stable than the current one).

Modern devices allow you to run a BIOS / UEFI update directly from under Windows. The whole update usually comes down to downloading and running an EXE file (like any other program), and after that the PC / laptop will reboot and update the BIOS on its own (automatically, without your participation).

Of course, the method is relevant for those who already have Windows on the disk. More detailed instructions below.

Successful work!

Hello friends. Sometimes readers contact me in the comments with a problem, they say, I can’t enter the BIOS, what to do. At the same time, they report that they have tried all possible keys that may be responsible for entering the BIOS. How to solve this problem? Below we will consider its cause and solution using a specific example with individual models of Acer laptops. And also let's talk about an alternative universal way to access the UEFI BIOS - from a running Windows EFI system or from a system recovery environment on removable media.

I can not enter the BIOS: what to do?

How to get into the BIOS if the keys intended for this do not work

So, friends, certain keys are responsible for entering the BIOS at the stage of starting the computer. These can be F2, Delete, Esc, Ctrl+Alt+Esc, Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Alt+B, Ctrl+Alt+S, Ctrl+Alt+Esc. If you're working with a new, hitherto unfamiliar device, you can try them at random. But the exact key or combination should always be looked at in the instructions for the motherboard or laptop. If there is no instruction, then you need to use the information on the network.

But what if you cannot enter the BIOS, while trying various key combinations, including those indicated in the instructions for the motherboard or laptop?

Recently, a reader asked in the comments with the following problem:

Quote: Julia

Help me please. I can not enter the BIOS of the Acer V5 571 laptop. Neither F2, nor any other key or their combinations help. This was preceded by the replacement of the hard drive, which had to install Win 7. This is the first. Secondly, the desired Win 7 was installed on this new hard drive on another laptop, but the Acer laptop does not see this hard drive. And gives the message "Operaion sistem not found". At the same time, the hard drive on which Win 10 is installed perfectly loads.

Experienced users probably guessed that Julia's problem is most likely that the active UEFI mode in the BIOS prevents Windows 7 from starting on her laptop. Or, using another laptop, she installed the Seven on a disk with the MBR partitioning style. Either to a GPT-style disk, but booting Windows 7 on the causal Acer laptop is prevented by the included BIOS. What should Julia do? She needs to enter BIOS and disable UEFI mode, switch it to Legacy.

Or if you can disable Secure Boot separately, then disable only it, and then either reinstall Windows 7 to an empty unallocated space, clearing the disk of the partition structure, or convert the MBR disk to GPT from the Windows 10 or LiveDisk environment using programs like AOMEI Partition Assistant, Paragon Hard Disk Manager, MiniTool Partition Wizard, etc. These not only change the layout style of the hard disk while preserving the structure of the partitions and the data stored on them, but also keep Windows working by converting the System Reserved system boot partition into an EFI boot partition.

But how can Julia do these operations if she does not have access to the UEFI functionality? There are two options for what to do in this situation:

  • The first is to enter UEFI from the environment of a running Windows 10, and if there was none, then, accordingly, this could be done from bootable media with the recovery environment of Windows EFI systems;
  • The second is to update the BIOS of your device.

Acer V5 series BIOS update

The second option - updating the BIOS - is a difficult path for the average person, and, accordingly, it should be resorted to as a last resort. And this recipe does not work with every device. But it can definitely help Acer V5 series laptops, which our reader owns one of the models. Its essence is to create a flash drive with a BIOS update utility and boot a laptop from this flash drive. This process is shown in detail in a YouTube video.

How to enter UEFI if the BIOS entry keys do not work

Well, now let's talk about the mentioned universal, simpler way to enter UEFI in case the BIOS entry keys do not work. If we have a working Windows 8.1 or 10 EFI system, UEFI login can be done using special boot options. Open the Settings app. In Windows 8.1, go to the "Update and Recovery" section. We go to the "Recovery" subsection. On the right, we look at "Special boot options." Click "Restart Now".

In Windows 10, the same option is located in the "Update and Security" section, in the "Recovery" subsection.

We will get into the menu for selecting the action of the recovery environment. Here we can not directly enter the BIOS environment, but simply select a boot device other than the current hard disk, for example, a USB flash drive or DVD. To do this, select the option "Use device".

If it is necessary to enter the BIOS, then in the action selection menu, click "Troubleshooting".

Then - "Advanced Options".

Click "Reload".

And get into the BIOS UEFI interface.

And how to enter the UEFI BIOS if Windows does not boot or is not installed at all? In principle, we do not need Windows itself, but its recovery environment. This is implemented in the installation process of Windows 8.1 and 10. But here it is necessary that two circumstances converge:

  • The bootable flash drive must be UEFI, such is created, for example, by the Rufus utility with the ISO recording parameters as in the screenshot below;

  • And by default, the computer should start from such a bootable USB flash drive, as from a device that is in boot priority next to the hard drive on which Windows has crashed or is missing.

So, at the first stage of the installation process, click "Next".

Click "System Restore".

Friends, many of you, from among the experienced users, know about one of the suitable resuscitation Live disks based on WinPE - , the possibilities of which we from time to time consider on the pages of the site. If you have one stored in a safe place in case of a system failure, you do not need to worry about creating a bootable media with the Windows installation process. You can run the System Recovery Environment on the Sagittarius Live Disk. Access to it is implemented in the Live-disk menu.

We start, select the keyboard layout.

Reset, update and flash the BIOS

If the BIOS has experienced a software failure, an update through Windows may help. In the latter case, accordingly, the operating system must start on the computer. Instructions and software for updating the BIOS should be found in the specification of the motherboard or laptop on the official website of the manufacturer. The most extreme case is the restoration of a damaged BIOS firmware with a programmer. You can see how this is done in principle. However, friends, without proper preparation and experience, I do not advise you to resort to such actions. If you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to contact a computer wizard.

Modern BIOS versions look different, but they have the same task - the initial setup and check of the computer's performance. You can also access them in the same ways. Even if you have a UEFI interface in front of you, which often differs not only in appearance, but also in mouse and Russian language support.

UEFI Interface / pcInside.info

To go to the BIOS menu on a desktop computer, you need to press the Del key at boot, in rare cases - F2. Usually the desired key is indicated on the screen before information about the operating system is displayed. The message looks something like this: "Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup", "Press DEL to run setup", or "Please press DEL or F2 to enter UEFI BIOS settings".

It is necessary to press the indicated key exactly at the moment of displaying such a message. For fidelity, you can press several times. But if you still do not have time, wait until it starts and restart your PC to try again.

At each boot, try only one key. You may simply not have time to check several options.

Depending on the manufacturer, year of manufacture and series of the laptop, you can enter the BIOS in different ways. Various keys or even are used, and there may not be any messages on the screen indicating the necessary ones.

It is better to check only one of the possible options at a time. If it does not work, wait until Windows starts, restart your PC and try another key or combination. You should not check several options at once, as you may simply not get into the right period of time.

Asus laptops

Most often, the F2 key is used to enter the BIOS while turning on the laptop. Less common options are Del and F9.

If that doesn't work, turn off the laptop, hold Esc, and then press the power button. Do not release Esc until the Boot menu appears on the screen. In it, you need to go to Enter Setup and press Enter.

Acer laptops

In Acer laptops, the most commonly used keys are F1 and F2, as well as the combination Ctrl + Alt + Esc. Acer Aspire series may require Ctrl+F2. In the TravelMate and Extensa lines, you usually need to press F2 or Del to enter the BIOS. In older models of Acer laptops, the combinations Ctrl + Alt + Del and Ctrl + Alt + Esc may occur.

Lenovo laptops

Entering the BIOS on Lenovo laptops most often requires pressing the F2 key. On many ultrabooks and hybrid laptops, a number of F-keys can only be activated with Fn, which means that you will need to press Fn + F2. The F8 and Del keys are much less common.

Vaio series models may have a dedicated ASSIST button. If you click on it while the laptop is booting, a menu will appear with the option to select Start BIOS Setup.

Older laptops may use the F1, F2, F3, and Del keys.

Dell laptops

In the case of Dell laptops, the most common way to enter the BIOS is the F2 key. Slightly less common are F1, F10, Del, Esc and Insert.

How to enter UEFI from Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10

In the latest versions on laptops with UEFI, you can enter the I / O subsystem even when the system is already loaded. To do this, go to "Settings" and act depending on the version of the operating system.

For Windows 8

"Change PC settings" → "General" → "Special boot options" → "Restart now" → "Diagnostics" → "Advanced settings" → "UEFI firmware settings" → "Restart".

For Windows 8.1

Change PC Settings → Update and Recovery → Recovery → Advanced Boot Options → Restart Now → Diagnostics → Advanced Options → UEFI Firmware Settings → Restart.

For Windows 10

Update & Security → Recovery → Advanced Boot Options → Restart Now → Troubleshooting → Advanced Options → UEFI Firmware Settings → Restart.

For Windows 10, there is an alternative way to navigate to UEFI from the login screen or through the Start menu. In both cases, you need to click on the "Shutdown" icon and, while holding the Shift key, start the reboot. This action will open the special boot options section of the system.

After that, you will need to follow the same steps as in the previous method. That is, you will need to go to the "Troubleshooting" item, select "Advanced Options" and "UEFI Firmware Settings", and then click "Restart".
